Abolishment of morphology-based taxa and change to binomial species names: 2022 taxonomy update of the ICTV bacterial viruses subcommittee

Dann Turner et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the activities of the Bacterial Viruses Subcommittee of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses from March 2021 to March 2022. It provides an overview of the new classifications proposed in 2021, approved by the Executive Committee, and ratified by vote in 2022. The taxonomy of bacterial viruses underwent significant changes, including the abolition of the paraphyletic morphological families Podoviridae, Siphoviridae, and Myoviridae, as well as the order Caudovirales, and the establishment of a binomial nomenclature system for species. Additionally, one order, 22 families, 30 subfamilies, 321 genera, and 862 species were newly created, promoted, or moved.

Phage family classification under Caudoviricetes: A review of current tools using the latest ICTV classification framework

Yilin Zhu et al.

Summary: Bacteriophages, the most widespread and diverse viruses infecting bacteria, play important roles in shaping various microbiomes. However, the taxonomic classification of new viruses lags behind sequencing efforts due to the lack of a standard classification pipeline. This study provides a comprehensive review and comparison of taxonomic classification tools, demonstrating their utilities and guiding the choice of appropriate pipelines. The results show that the new family classification framework improves the feasibility of classification.

Phage Resistance Evolution Induces the Sensitivity of Specific Antibiotics in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1

Guanhua Xuan et al.

Summary: Bacteria often face selection pressures from both antibiotics and lytic phages, but the evolutionary interactions between antibiotics and phages are poorly understood. This study characterized a phage-resistant variant of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and found that it showed increased sensitivity to certain antibiotics. Whole genome sequencing revealed significant genetic differences between the phage-resistant variant and the reference strain, and disruption of phage adsorption was proposed as the main cause for the evolution of resistance. The study provides new insights into the trade-off mechanism between phage resistance and antibiotic sensitivity, which may have implications for future clinical use of phage therapies.

A Critical Evaluation of Newer β-Lactam Antibiotics for Treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infections

Kathleen C. Blomquist et al.

Summary: This article critically evaluates common Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistance mechanisms and the properties newer beta-lactam antimicrobials possess to evade these mechanisms. The study highlights the limitations in therapeutic options to treat P aeruginosa infections due to its resistance mechanisms, and the potential gains of newer beta-lactams in improving therapeutic potential. Pharmacists need to consider availability, turnaround of susceptibility testing, and product cost when recommending or evaluating the use of these agents for multidrug-resistant P aeruginosa isolates.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa adaptation and evolution in patients with cystic fibrosis

Elio Rossi et al.

Summary: Genome sequencing reveals the phenotypic adaptation and transmission of P. aeruginosa in CF airways, but its limited potential in predicting chronic infection and adaptive state calls for linking phenotypic traits to genome sequences. The environmental conditions of CF lungs shape the genetic and phenotypic changes of P. aeruginosa, leading to its diversity and plasticity.

Tocopherol and phytol possess anti-quorum sensing mediated anti-infective behavior against Vibrio campbellii in aquaculture: An in vitro and in vivo study

Rajaiah Alexpandi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that plant-derived active compounds tocopherol and phytol are effective against V. campbellii infection in tomato clownfish, decreasing biofilm production and virulence factors without impacting bacterial growth. In vivo experiments prove that these compounds increase survival rates of infected fishes by hindering intestinal colonization of V. campbellii, making them promising therapeutic agents for aquaculture bacterial infections.

Bacterial community structure of early-stage biofilms is dictated by temporal succession rather than substrate types in the southern coastal seawater of India

T. J. Sushmitha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the succession of biofilm-forming bacterial communities on stainless steel, high-density polyethylene, and titanium substrata over 15 days in the southern coastal region of India. The results showed that temporal succession had a profound influence on the early-stage biofilm-forming microbiota, overshadowing the influence of substrate material. Different substrate types did not exhibit specific bacterial groups, indicating that temporal dynamics played a key role in biofilm formation.

Patterns of pre-operative opioid use affect the risk for complications after total joint replacement

Bheeshma Ravi et al.

Summary: Chronic pre-operative opioid use is associated with an increased risk for complications after total joint arthroplasty, while intermittent use is not. The majority of patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty did not use opioids on a chronic basis in the year preceding surgery.

Advances in Bacteriophage Therapy against Relevant MultiDrug-Resistant Pathogens

Antonio Broncano-Lavado et al.

Summary: The increase in bacterial multiresistance and the shortage of new antibiotics are major public health concerns. Phage therapy has emerged as a promising alternative treatment, especially when used in combination with antibiotics to deal with infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria.
