A generalized multi-aspect distance metric for mixed-type data clustering

Summary: This study proposed a new measure of distance for a mixed-type data set, which considers the inter-attribute and intra-attribute information depending on the type of attributes. The proposed method utilizes entropy, Jensen-Shannon divergence, and a modified version of Mahalanobis distance. A unified framework based on mutual information is also introduced to control attributes' contribution to distance measurement. Extensive evaluation on benchmark data sets demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed method.

A Novel Method to Classify and Subgroup Patients With IBS Based on Gastrointestinal Symptoms and Psychological Profiles

Summary: Latent class analysis identified 7 distinct IBS subgroups characterized by varying degrees of gastrointestinal symptoms, extraintestinal symptoms, and psychological comorbidity. The proportion of subjects with severe IBS symptom scores, high levels of perceived stress, and high levels of gastrointestinal symptom-specific anxiety was significantly higher in clusters with high psychological comorbidity. Further research is needed to assess whether these subgroups might be used to direct treatment.
