Lipidome variation of industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains analyzed by LC-QTOF/MS-based untargeted lipidomics

Shuka Komori et al.

Summary: This study conducted untargeted lipidomics analysis on 10 yeast strains and found that lipids containing very long-chain fatty acids and hydroxy long-chain fatty acids had a relatively large relative standard deviation (RSD), while lipids containing acyl chains commonly found in yeast, such as C16 -C18, showed a smaller RSD among the 10 strains. Furthermore, principal component analysis of lipid profiles showed similar trends among industrial yeast strains. Correlation analysis between lipid abundance and phenotypes revealed that molecular species with a high RSD in abundance among the 10 strains were correlated with specific stress tolerance and fermentation phenotypes.

To metabolomics and beyond: a technological portfolio to investigate cancer metabolism

Federica Danzi et al.

Summary: Tumour cells possess the ability to reprogram their metabolism in order to support tumor growth, progression, and resistance. This reprogramming involves significant changes in bioenergetic, biosynthetic, and redox status to meet the increased energetic demands of the cells. Recent advancements in biochemical technologies, such as metabolomics and fluxomics, have provided researchers with powerful tools to study cancer metabolism and gain a better understanding of its complex activities on both qualitative and mechanistic levels. Additionally, the development of single-cell analysis technologies and functional genomic screening have further enhanced our ability to investigate cancer biology, identify biomarkers, and discover new therapeutic targets and treatment strategies.

Isotope Calculation Gadgets: A Series of Software for Isotope-Tracing Experiments in Garuda Platform

Nobuyuki Okahashi et al.

Summary: Isotope tracing is a powerful technique for studying intracellular metabolism. However, it involves time-consuming steps. In this study, a series of software was developed on the Garuda platform to support the entire workflow of isotope-tracing experiments, significantly reducing the required time and effort by eliminating the need for data format conversion.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
