Walk into the Warm Fog over Indo-Gangetic Plain Region

Sachin D. Ghude et al.

Summary: Persistent heavy fog in northern India during winter disrupts transportation systems and affects the lives of about 400 million people. The causes and predictability of the fog in this region are not yet fully understood. The WiFEX initiative aims to develop a fog forecasting capability through extensive research and field observations.

Analysis of aerosol liquid water content and its role in visibility reduction in Delhi

Umer Ali et al.

Summary: This study examined the characteristics of aerosol liquid water content (ALWC) in PM2.5 in Delhi using real-time measurements and thermodynamic modeling. The results showed that ALWC increased by 60% in the winter of 2020-2021 compared to the previous year, with an exponential relationship with relative humidity (RH) and significant increase when RH > 80%. Ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate were the main contributors to ALWC, with their relative contributions varying under different RH conditions. Increased ALWC due to high PM2.5 and RH resulted in a significant reduction in visibility.

Ammonium Chloride Associated Aerosol Liquid Water Enhances Haze in Delhi, India

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: This study reveals that Delhi, a highly polluted city, has the highest reported aerosol water content worldwide. The presence of high aerosol water exacerbates air pollution and reduces visibility, while also inhibiting the dispersion of pollutants.

Complex Interplay Between Organic and Secondary Inorganic Aerosols With Ambient Relative Humidity Implicates the Aerosol Liquid Water Content Over India During Wintertime

Amar Krishna Gopinath et al.

Summary: This study reveals a comprehensive picture of Aerosol Liquid Water Content (ALWC) in fine mode aerosols during the winter season over the Indian continental region. The factors modulating ALWC are primarily dependent on relative humidity (RH) and the study also reveals significant spatial heterogeneity in ALWC over India, strongly associating with high aerosol mass loading and RH. The Indo-Gangetic Plain is observed to be a hotspot of higher ALWC, explaining the prevalent conditions of haze and smog during winter in this region.

Enhanced aerosol particle growth sustained by high continental chlorine emission in India

Sachin S. Gunthe et al.

Summary: The study suggests that half of the reduced visibility in cities in India is attributed to local emission of gas-phase hydrochloric acid from waste-burning and industry. The high concentration of hydrochloric acid contributes to haze and fog formation, impacting the economy and human health. Identifying and regulating gaseous hydrochloric acid emissions could be critical to improving visibility and human health in India.

Plasma Hsp90 levels in patients with systemic sclerosis and relation to lung and skin involvement: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study

Hana Storkanova et al.

Summary: According to the study, plasma levels of Hsp90 are increased in patients with systemic sclerosis compared to healthy controls, and are associated with increased inflammatory activity, worsened lung function, and extent of skin involvement in patients with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis. In patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease treated with cyclophosphamide, baseline Hsp90 levels can predict changes in DLCO over 12 months of therapy.

Abating ammonia is more cost-effective than nitrogen oxides for mitigating PM2.5 air pollution

Baojing Gu et al.

Summary: The study shows that nitrogen contributes significantly to global PM2.5 exposure and has a substantial impact on global health. Controlling ammonia emissions has a lower cost compared to nitrogen oxides emissions, emphasizing the priority for reducing ammonia emissions.

Control of particulate nitrate air pollution in China

Shixian Zhai et al.

Summary: The concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in China decreased by 30-50% from 2013 to 2018 due to emission controls, but the nitrate component did not decrease effectively. Increased particulate nitrate concentration during winter haze pollution events is attributed to the particulate fraction transitioning from gaseous nitric acid. Reducing ammonia emissions is suggested as an effective method to decrease the nitrate component of fine particulate matter pollution in the North China Plain.

Chemical transport models often underestimate inorganic aerosol acidity in remote regions of the atmosphere

Benjamin A. Nault et al.

Summary: Observations show that the acidity of inorganic aerosols in remote areas is often higher than predicted by chemical transport models, leading to a potential underestimation of direct radiative cooling effects. Aerosol pH and ammonium balance increase with remoteness, and these differences between observations and predictions may result in underestimating direct radiative cooling effects for sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium aerosols.
