Annotation of biologically relevant ligands in UniProtKB using ChEBI

Elisabeth Coudert et al.

Summary: This study aims to provide high-quality annotations of binding sites for biologically relevant ligands in UniProtKB using the ChEBI chemical ontology. The researchers developed improved search and query facilities for these binding sites and used stable unique identifiers from ChEBI as reference vocabulary for the annotations. The annotations are freely available for querying and downloading through the UniProt website, REST API, SPARQL endpoint, and FTP site.

Probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics for better sleep quality: a narrative review

J. E. Haarhuis et al.

Summary: There is a growing prevalence of sleep problems and insomnia worldwide, and studies have suggested that the gut microbiome might influence sleep quality. This review evaluated the potential of pro-, pre-, and postbiotic treatments to improve sleep quality and also explored their effects on stress and anxiety. The findings showed that while some studies found improvements in sleep quality and cortisol levels after these treatments, others did not show significant improvements. The discrepancies can be attributed to variations in study designs, populations, treatments, distress levels, and sex differences.

Production of ?-Aminobutyrate (GABA) in Recombinant Corynebacterium glutamicum by Expression of Glutamate Decarboxylase Active at Neutral pH

Jina Son et al.

Summary: In this study, recombinant strains of Corynebacterium glutamicum were developed to express mutated GAD from Escherichia coli, GADs from Lactococcus lactis CICC20209, and Lactobacillus senmaizukei. These strains showed enhanced stability and adaptability at a pH of approximately 7.0. Batch fermentation experiments showed improved GABA production and yields at pH 6.0 and pH 7.0 from 100 g/L glucose.

Microbial Production and Enzymatic Biosynthesis of γ-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) Using Lactobacillus plantarum FNCC 260 Isolated from Indonesian Fermented Foods

Ida Bagus Agung Yogeswara et al.

Summary: Thirty strains of GABA-producing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated and screened from traditional Indonesian fermented foods in this study. Lactobacillus plantarum strains FNCC 260 and FNCC 343 were identified as capable of converting monosodium glutamate (MSG) to GABA, with L. plantarum FNCC 260 producing the highest yield of GABA after 60 hours of cultivation. The addition of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) and pyridoxine, as well as a higher initial concentration of MSG, resulted in increased GABA production. The enzymatic conversion of MSG to GABA using purified recombinant glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) from L. plantarum FNCC 260 showed significantly higher efficiency compared to fermentation production.

Genomics-based approaches to identify and predict the health-promoting and safety activities of promising probiotic strains-A probiogenomics review

Cecilia Castro-Lopez et al.

Summary: The clinical evidence supporting the beneficial effects of probiotics in consumer's health and wellness has increased over the past two decades, leading to the production of different probiotic foods and strains by the food and pharmaceutical industries. Comprehensive trials are necessary to characterize probiotic candidates, including their resistance to physiological barriers, inhibition of pathogens, adherence to mucus, and other properties. Further research is needed to clarify the metabolic capabilities, adaptation features, physiological functions, safety, and molecular mechanisms underlying the functional activities of probiotics. Genomics-based approaches, such as probiogenomics, have been successfully applied to study current probiotics and identify new potential candidates with health-promoting and safety properties.
