Effects of excess electrons/holes on fracture toughness of single-crystal Si

Hiroyuki Hirakata et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that injecting excess electrons or holes into a material by electron beam irradiation can enhance bond strength. Experimental and computational results show that the increase in fracture toughness is more significant under hole-injection conditions.

Estimating the lower-limit of fracture toughness from ideal-strength calculations

Leah Borgsmiller et al.

Summary: Fracture mechanics is a fundamental topic in materials science, with fracture toughness being a crucial material property for device design. This study demonstrates that quantum-mechanical density functional theory calculations, along with an integral stress-displacement method, can be used to estimate fracture energy needed to calculate fracture toughness. By utilizing fracture energy from the weakest crystallographic direction, an estimation for the lower-limit of fracture toughness can be obtained, which is in good agreement with experimental single crystal measurements.
