Measuring Adherence to Sustainable Healthy Diets: A Scoping Review of Dietary Metrics

Priscila Machado et al.

Summary: Comprehensive metrics are needed to measure dietary patterns and assess the effectiveness of policy actions promoting sustainable healthy diets. A scoping review found that current dietary metrics have a strong adherence to health-related principles but weak adherence to environmental and sociocultural principles. None of the existing metrics capture all principles of sustainable healthy diets, which highlights the importance of including these aspects in future dietary recommendations.

Impact of a Farm-to-School Nutrition and Gardening Intervention for Native American Families from the FRESH Study: A Randomized Wait-List Controlled Trial

Tori Taniguchi et al.

Summary: Establishing healthy eating habits during childhood is crucial for preventing chronic diseases in adulthood. This study investigated the impact of a farm-to-school intervention on dietary intake and health outcomes among Native American families. The results showed that the intervention significantly increased vegetable intake and willingness to try certain vegetables in children. This study is the first to implement such an intervention in rural, tribally owned Early Childhood and Education programs. Future interventions should consider involving parents to support healthy eating for the whole family.

Low demand mitigation options for achieving Sustainable Development Goals: Role of reduced food waste and sustainable dietary choice

Shreya Some et al.

Summary: This paper synthesizes the existing literature on food waste reduction at the consumer end and healthy dietary choices featuring less meat and less processed food, and explores the link between these mitigation options and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The assessment shows that these options have synergies with energy saving and are intricately linked with awareness and educational programs, technological solutions/innovation, policy designs, and involvement of multiple social actors. The paper categorizes specific interventions related to these two mitigation options using the framework of "Avoid," "Shift," and "Improve." A total of 92 interventions are identified and the social actors involved in implementing these interventions are summarized.

Megan R. Harrison et al.

Summary: This review examines the assessment of sustainable healthy diets in the literature since 2010, with a focus on indicators used and their frequency. The majority of studies were conducted in high-income countries and primarily examined health and environmental aspects, while neglecting sociocultural dimensions. This highlights the need for more robust and comprehensive indicators to guide decision-making in this field.
