Malnutrition in older adults

Elsa Dent et al.

Summary: Malnutrition is common in older adults and has negative impacts on health, society, and aged-care systems. Due to age-related decline, limited access to nutritious food, and comorbidity, older adults are at greater risk of malnutrition. Clinical guidelines recommend routine screening and individualized nutritional support, but these recommendations are often not followed in practice.

Prevalence of Undernutrition, Frailty and Sarcopenia in Community-Dwelling People Aged 50 Years and Above: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Nada Almohaisen et al.

Summary: The prevalence and incidence of undernutrition, frailty, and sarcopenia among people aged >= 50 living in community dwellings in China were quantified. The results showed a significant occurrence of these conditions, with nearly one in five individuals being affected. Women had a higher occurrence, possibly due to longer life expectancy. More research is needed to understand the population characteristics and the overlap between these conditions.

Malnutrition in Older Adults-Effect on Falls and Fractures: A Narrative Review

Malgorzata Kupisz-Urbanska et al.

Summary: Malnutrition in older adults has negative impacts on health status, increasing mortality and morbidity. It can contribute to the development of geriatric syndromes, leading to a higher prevalence of falls and osteoporotic fractures, which in turn results in loss of independence and a greater likelihood of institutionalization. This review provides an overview of current literature on the topic and aims to guide physicians in making appropriate decisions to prevent the vicious cycle of falls, fractures, and their negative outcomes in malnourished patients.
