The Association of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis with Appetite Regulation in Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs)

Rafal Podgorski et al.

Summary: Prenatal alcohol exposure can cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), leading to growth impairment and various developmental, physical, and cognitive disorders in children. This study aimed to investigate the levels of hormones related to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in FASD patients. Results showed that fasting proopiomelanocortin (POMC) levels were lower in FASD patients compared to controls. However, cortisol concentrations did not differ. The study suggests that hormonal dysregulation may contribute to the negative effects of FASDs on growth, development, and neurological functions.

Sexual Dimorphism in Kisspeptin Signaling

Eun Bee Lee et al.

Summary: Kisspeptin (KP) and kisspeptin receptor (KPR) play essential roles in the development and function of gonads. There is sexual dimorphism in the expression and function of KP and KPR in the hypothalamus and other tissues. Gonadal hormones regulate KP neurons and affect reproductive function through pulsatile gonadotropin secretion. KP and KPR are also expressed in extrahypothalamic tissues. While the sexual dimorphism of hypothalamic KP is well characterized, little is known about extrahypothalamic KP.

Serum levels of hormones regulating appetite in patients with cystic fibrosis - a single-center, cross-sectional study

Sabina Galiniak et al.

Summary: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common genetically determined disease caused by a mutation in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator protein gene. This study found significantly reduced serum levels of ghrelin and ASP in CF patients, but no difference in PYY and alpha-MSH levels compared to healthy subjects. Ghrelin was negatively correlated with age, body mass index, and C-reactive protein, while PYY was negatively associated with age in CF patients.

Aberrant expression of agouti signaling protein (ASIP) as a cause of monogenic severe childhood obesity

Summary: We report a heterozygous tandem duplication in the ASIP gene locus that causes widespread ectopic expression of ASIP in a female patient with extreme childhood obesity. Our data indicate that this ubiquitous ectopic ASIP expression is likely a monogenic cause of human obesity.

Antifibrotic and Anti-Inflammatory Actions of α-Melanocytic Hormone: New Roles for an Old Player

Roshan Dinparastisaleh et al.

Summary: The melanocortin system plays important roles in sexual activity, exocrine secretion, energy homeostasis, and immunomodulation. Chronic inflammation can lead to fibrosis, but melanocortin agonists may have favorable effects on the progression from tissue injury to inflammation, from inflammation to fibrosis, and from fibrosis to organ dysfunction. The structure, receptor signaling, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic properties of alpha-MSH suggest that alpha-MSH analogues could be promising therapeutic candidates for inflammatory and fibrotic diseases.

Summary: This study evaluated the characteristics and significance of serum kisspeptin and MKRN3 levels for the diagnosis of central precocious puberty (CPP) in girls. Results showed that serum kisspeptin levels were higher in the CPP group compared to the normal control group, while serum MKRN3 levels were lower in both groups. However, these two measurements were not able to differentiate girls with CPP from those with premature thelarche and prepubertal control.
