Contribution of macro- and micronutrients intake to gastrointestinal cancer mortality in the ONCONUT cohort: Classical vs. modern approaches

Rossella Donghia et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of macro- and micronutrients intake on mortality in gastrointestinal cancer patients, comparing different statistical approaches. The ONCONUT project started in 1992 to evaluate the relationship between diet and cancer development in elderly individuals from Southern Italy. Patients who died from specific causes were included in the study and survival analysis was conducted. Different techniques, including Cox proportional-hazards model, random survival forest (RSF), Survival Support Vector Machine (SSVM), and C-index, were tested for performance. The new prediction mode called Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP) was also used. RSF had the best performance, while SSVM had the worst C-index. SHAP helped understand the role of individual patient features in mortality. Combining SHAP with RSF and classical CPH showed promise for future clinical applications.

Food Network Analysis in Non-Obese Patients with or without Steatosis

Rossella Donghia et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the differences in blood parameters and dietary habits in non-obese patients with and without steatosis. The prevalence of non-obese participants with steatosis was found to be 42.86%. Although there were many significant differences in blood parameters and dietary habits, a network analysis showed that the two groups had similar dietary habits, suggesting that pathophysiological, genetic, and hormonal patterns may play a role in their liver status, irrespective of weight.

Diet and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a short narrative review

W. J. Kwanten

Summary: The growing importance of NAFLD, the most prevalent non-communicable liver disease, highlights the crucial role of lifestyle and diet. Western diet elements such as saturated fats, carbohydrates, soft drinks, red meat, and ultra-processed foods are associated with NAFLD. Conversely, diets rich in nuts, fruits, vegetables, and unsaturated fats, like the Mediterranean diet, are linked to a lower prevalence and severity of NAFLD. As there is no approved medical therapy for NAFLD, the focus of therapy is primarily on lifestyle and diet. This review provides a concise overview of the influence of specific diets or individual nutrients on NAFLD and discusses different dietary approaches, concluding with practical recommendations.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Elizabeth E. Powell et al.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common global health issue with significant associations with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, leading to serious complications like cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. While cardiovascular disease and extrahepatic malignancy are the main causes of death in NAFLD patients, advanced liver fibrosis is a key prognostic marker for liver-related outcomes and overall mortality.

Dairy consumption and hepatocellular carcinoma risk

Bodo C. Melnik

Summary: This review provides evidence for milk and dairy intake as critical risk factors in the pathogenesis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with milk proteins and exosomes potentially promoting HCC development through mechanisms like increased mTORC1 activity and delivery of oncogenic miRs to the liver. Understanding the impact of milk-derived components on HCC pathogenesis may have implications for dietary recommendations and preventive strategies.
