Which preoperative immunonutritional index best predicts postoperative mortality after palliative surgery for malignant bowel obstruction in patients with late-stage cancer? A single-center study in Japan comparing the modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), the prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and the controlling nutritional status (CONUT)

Yasuo Nagashima et al.

Summary: This study compared the utility of different immunonutritional parameters in predicting postoperative mortality in late-stage cancer patients undergoing palliative surgery. The results showed that the modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS) is a good predictor of 60-day mortality and overall survival.

Prognostic value of preoperative modified Glasgow prognostic score in surgical non-small cell lung cancer: A meta-analysis

Chenli Yang et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis study found that preoperative mGPS in surgical NSCLC patients can predict long-term survival. Elevated preoperative mGPS is associated with poorer overall survival and disease-free survival. These findings have important implications for guiding the surgical treatment of NSCLC patients.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the association between systemic inflammation, tumor characteristics, and immediate postoperative outcome among different subgroups of anemia in gastrointestinal cancer patients. The study found a higher prevalence of normocytic anemia and systemic inflammatory response among the study population. Systemic inflammation was significantly associated with higher nodal stage and margin positivity, while other postoperative complications were comparable among patients without an inflammatory response.

Prognostic role of modified Glasgow Prognostic score in elderly non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with anti-PD-1 antibodies

Tomohiro Tanaka et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the immunosenescence-related score as a prognostic predictor for elderly patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who were treated with anti-programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) axis inhibitors. The study included 51 patients aged >= 75 years and analyzed factors such as modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) to assess immunosenescence. The results showed that high mGPS was associated with lower disease control rate (DCR) and shorter median overall survival (mOS).

Summary: This meta-analysis found that Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) and modified Glasgow Prognostic Score (mGPS) have the potential to predict overall survival and progression-free survival in patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). The prognostic performance of these scores may vary among different types of cancer.

Inflammation-based prognostic scores in geriatric patients with rectal cancer

B. Manoglu et al.

Summary: This study compares surgical and oncological results in geriatric rectal cancer patients using inflammation-based prognostic scores. The findings indicate that inflammation scores are associated with surgical complications and mortality and can predict severe postoperative complications and early mortality. The study concludes that inflammation scores and the C-reactive protein-albumin ratio are powerful predictive factors for decreased overall survival in both geriatric and non-geriatric rectal cancer patients.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between selected preoperative inflammatory markers and outcomes of liver resection for colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). It was found that Glasgow prognostic score (GPS), modified Glasgow prognostic score (mGPS), and C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) had no impact on postoperative complications, but CAR was a better predictor of overall survival, especially after open liver resections.

Prognostic significance of controlling nutritional status score for patients with gastric cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jian Yin et al.

Summary: There is a correlation between controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score and survival and other clinical outcomes in patients with gastric cancer. The high CONUT group had lower 5-year overall survival, recurrence-free survival, and cancer-specific survival, and were at higher risk for advanced tumor stage and nodal status. The study suggests that CONUT score assessment should be included in the routine evaluation of gastric cancer patients.

Summary: In the era of immuno-oncology, imaging alone is insufficient to capture treatment responses in patients with stable disease treated with immunotherapy. The impact of the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) in gastric cancer

Jorge Nogueiro et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of prognostic nutritional index (PNI) on the prognosis of gastric cancer patients undergoing curative resection surgery was evaluated. The results showed that higher PNI was associated with longer overall survival (OS), better disease-free survival (DFS), and had a protective effect on postoperative morbidity and mortality. Therefore, PNI can be used to predict patients at increased risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality and help identify candidate patients who would benefit from perioperative nutritional support to improve surgical outcomes.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
