Do Triathletes Periodize Their Diet and Do Their Mineral Content, Body Composition and Aerobic Capacity Change during Training and Competition Periods?

Krzysztof Durkalec-Michalski et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the differences in energy value and nutrient intake, body composition, aerobic performance, and hair mineral status between training and competition periods for triathletes. The results indicated improved performance during the competition period, with no differences in nutrition and body composition between the two periods. Depletion in hair iron content was found during the competition period, and there were significant relationships between hair calcium content and aerobic performance during the training period. This highlights the importance of nutritional education for triathletes to prevent nutrient deficiencies.

Body Composition, Nutritional Intake Assessment, and Perceptions about Diet for Health and Performance: An Exploratory Study for Senior Futsal Players

Silvia Zambujo Brum et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the body composition and nutritional intake of senior male futsal players from the II Futsal Division-Azores Series and examine their personal perspectives on the benefits and barriers of healthy eating in relation to performance. Two groups were formed: one group completed a questionnaire and had anthropometric data collected (Group 1, n = 48), while the other group also underwent dietary recalls and interviews (Group 2, n = 20). The results showed that although most players had a healthy body composition, those in Group 2 had a significantly higher Body Mass Index, indicating pre-obesity, and a higher percentage of body fat compared to Group 1. Moreover, the dietary assessments revealed that Group 2 players met protein recommendations but fell short in energy and carbohydrate intake, while slightly exceeding fat recommendations. The interviews revealed that many of these players expressed dissatisfaction with their sport performance due to a deviation from healthy eating practices in their daily lives. They recognized the need to make dietary changes and identified specific foods to consume and avoid.

Updating futsal physiology, immune system, and performance

Leandro Borges et al.

Summary: Futsal players face risks of stress, injury, oxidative stress, and inflammation during training and matches, with goalkeepers requiring special attention. The FIFA injury prevention program has been shown to be effective in improving performance and preventing injury in futsal players. More research on training load and season regulation in futsal is needed to better understand the biochemical mechanisms involved.

Development and Validation of an Anthropometric Equation to Predict Fat Mass Percentage in Professional and Semi-Professional Male Futsal Players

Rita Giro et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the body composition of professional and semi-professional male futsal players, validate existing equations for estimating FM%, and develop a futsal-specific FM% prediction equation. None of the existing equations accurately predicted the FM% determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The novel Bettery (R) equation showed high accuracy and agreement with DXA measurements, making it the first valid and sport-specific assessment tool for FM% in male futsal players.

Effects of marathon race on selected myokines and sclerostin in middle-aged male amateur runners

Ewa Sliwicka et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of a marathon race on selected myokines and sclerostin in male recreational runners. The results indicated that a complex network of endocrine interactions is initiated in response to the marathon run, with increased levels of certain substances post-race. Further research is needed to fully understand the long-term impact of prolonged high intensity exercise on the human body.

Nutritional Knowledge and Eating Habits of the National Brazilian Futsal Team

Miguel Angelo dos Santos Duarte Junior et al.

Summary: The nutritional knowledge of players on the Brazilian national Futsal Team is generally low, especially in terms of sports nutrition. Players have limited consumption of dairy products and dietary supplements, while consumption of snacks and fruits is relatively higher. Education on appropriate supplement use and dietary intake may be necessary for Futsal players.
