Vitamins and Minerals for Blood Pressure Reduction in the General, Normotensive Population: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Six Supplements

Benjamin J. Behers et al.

Summary: Hypertension is the leading preventable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality worldwide, and even slightly elevated blood pressure within the normal range can increase the risk of death from heart disease and stroke. Calcium and magnesium supplementation significantly reduce blood pressure, while vitamins C and D did not show significant effects on lowering blood pressure.

Overview of salt restriction in the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) and the Mediterranean diet for blood pressure reduction

Christina Filippou et al.

Summary: Despite advances in pharmacological treatments, hypertension remains a major cause of premature morbidity and mortality worldwide. Dietary modifications, such as salt intake reduction and adherence to the DASH diet or MedDiet, have been recommended as an adjunct to antihypertensive drug treatment. This review summarizes the evidence supporting the blood pressure-lowering effects of these dietary interventions and their underlying physiological mechanisms in adults with and without hypertension.

Dietary Acid Load but Not Mediterranean Diet Adherence Score Is Associated With Metabolic and Cardiovascular Health State: A Population Observational Study From Northern Italy

Juana Maria Sanz et al.

Summary: Diet plays a crucial role in the development of chronic diseases. The Mediterranean diet has been shown to be beneficial for cardiometabolic health, while the Western diet has detrimental effects. This study found that dietary acid load is associated with metabolic and cardiovascular prognosis, and that assessing DAL using 24-hour dietary recalls may be a better predictor of cardiometabolic health compared to MDA evaluated using food frequency questionnaires.

The Role and Mechanism of Intestinal Flora in Blood Pressure Regulation and Hypertension Development

Jing Li et al.

Summary: Studies have shown a close association between gut microbiome and hypertension, with gut dysbiosis and metabolites playing a significant role in blood pressure control. Future research should focus on verifying the mechanisms through which the gut regulates blood pressure and exploring the feasibility of intervention strategies targeting gut dysbiosis for individuals with hypertension.

Lifestyle interventions for the prevention and treatment of hypertension

Pedro L. Valenzuela et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the epidemiological evidence and physiological mechanisms supporting the benefits of major lifestyle interventions in hypertension prevention and adjuvant treatment. Lifestyle interventions, including regular physical exercise, body weight management, healthy diet, adequate sleep patterns, circadian entrainment, and stress management, are increasingly supported as effective approaches in combating hypertension.

Effect of Diet and Dietary Components on the Composition of the Gut Microbiota

Ashley Beam et al.

Summary: This review explores the impact of different diets on the gut microbiota composition, finding that specific dietary components in plant-based and Mediterranean diets can influence microbial composition and bacterial metabolites, which in turn affect systemic inflammation and metabolic endotoxemia. These associations between diet/dietary components and altering bacterial composition may provide potential therapeutic targets for type II diabetes, obesity, and inflammatory diseases.
