Impact of Menopause and the Menstrual Cycle on Oxidative Stress in Japanese Women

Ayaka Ishikawa et al.

Summary: Although the overall role of estrogen in oxidative stress among women is unclear, this study found that postmenopausal women have higher levels of oxidative stress compared to premenopausal women. The study also found a significant correlation between oxidative stress and copper concentration. However, the menstrual cycle did not significantly affect oxidative stress in premenopausal women. These findings suggest that postmenopausal hypoestrogenism is associated with elevated oxidative stress.

High-intensity interval training improves long-term memory and increases hippocampal antioxidant activity and BDNF levels in ovariectomized Wistar rats

Arthur Rocha-Gomes et al.

Summary: Menopause is a period in which the hormone estrogen stops being produced by women, causing physiological, cognitive, and behavioral changes. Therefore, alternative methods are needed to mitigate the effects of menopause, particularly in terms of cognition and behavior. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has shown potential in improving cognition by increasing antioxidant defenses and BDNF levels. This study aimed to assess the effects of HIIT on behavior and hippocampal neurochemistry in ovariectomized adult rats.

Physical exercise improves mitochondrial function in ovariectomized rats

Daniele Leao Ignacio et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that exercise can help improve skeletal muscle mitochondrial dysfunction in ovariectomized rats by reducing fat accumulation and body weight gain. Exercise training can decrease muscle lactate production, restore mitochondrial oxygen consumption, and enhance oxidative phosphorylation efficiency.

The superior beneficial effects of exercise training versus hormone replacement therapy on skeletal muscle of ovariectomized rats

Sara Barros Silva et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown the positive effects of estradiol replacement therapy and physical exercise on skeletal muscle during menopause. This study aimed to compare the effects of endurance exercise training and estradiol replacement therapy on skeletal muscle in ovariectomized rats. The results showed that endurance exercise training improved aerobic capacity and muscle efficiency, while estradiol replacement therapy increased antioxidant capacity and reduced inflammation in the skeletal muscle of ovariectomized rats.

Ovariectomy reduces cholinergic modulation of excitatory synaptic transmission in the rat entorhinal cortex

Ariel A. Batallan Burrowes et al.

Summary: Estrogens play a role in promoting the function of cholinergic neurons and have an impact on cognitive function. This study found that ovariectomy reduces the expression of cholinergic synaptic proteins in the entorhinal cortex, and this reduction can be prevented by estradiol replacement. Ovariectomy also impairs the cholinergic modulation of excitatory transmission in the entorhinal cortex, which may be related to the changes in cholinergic proteins.

Proteomics analysis of adipose depots after intermittent fasting reveals visceral fat preservation mechanisms

Dylan J. Harney et al.

Summary: Intermittent fasting, particularly every-other-day fasting, results in increased mitochondria protein content and fatty acid synthesis enzymes in subcutaneous and visceral white adipose tissue in mice. It also downregulates lipolysis specifically in visceral WAT and reduces inflammatory collagen IV, leading to improved insulin sensitivity.

The Impact of Intermittent Fasting on Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, Neurotrophin 3, and Rat Behavior in a Rat Model of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Basem H. Elesawy et al.

Summary: Intermittent fasting was found to significantly increase levels of neurotrophin 3 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in both control and type 2 diabetes mellitus rats, while also elevating serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate levels in diabetic rats. Additionally, the study showed that IF modulated glucose homeostasis parameters and improved insulin resistance.

Impact of Dietary Restriction Regimens on Mitochondria, Heart, and Endothelial Function: A Brief Overview

Cristina Elena Savencu et al.

Summary: Caloric restriction (CR) and intermittent fasting (IF) are dietary strategies that promote health benefits by interfering with mechanisms that lead to cardiovascular diseases. Both approaches can decrease body weight, insulin resistance, blood pressure, lipids, and inflammation. They improve mitochondrial function, reduce oxidative stress, and enhance cardiac and vascular function. Further clinical studies are needed to evaluate long-term safety.

Preconditioning Exercise in Rats Attenuates Early Brain Injury Resulting from Subarachnoid Hemorrhage by Reducing Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Neuronal Apoptosis

Shotaro Otsuka et al.

Summary: Preconditioning exercise can ameliorate early brain injury (EBI) following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation through the activation of Nrf2/HO-1 pathway, and decreasing apoptosis via the 14-3-3 gamma/p-beta-catenin Ser37/Bax/caspase-3 pathway.
