Identification and Characterization of Genomic Predictors of Sarcopenia and Sarcopenic Obesity Using UK Biobank Data

Ekaterina A. Semenova et al.

Summary: The decline in muscle mass, strength and gait speed is a sign of severe sarcopenia, which may have genetic risk factors. By combining genome-wide association studies of handgrip strength, lean mass, and walking pace, researchers have identified 78 independent SNPs associated with all three traits. These SNPs are also associated with body fat percentage and type 2 diabetes, indicating common risk alleles. Furthermore, bioinformatic analysis revealed the associations between sarcopenia risk alleles and various lifestyle factors and health outcomes. The findings highlight the genetic basis of sarcopenia and its relationship with obesity and other health conditions.

Summary: This study provides the largest investigation of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) in individuals of East Asian ancestries, identifying 80 IBD loci, including 81 new loci. The study also discovers new IBD genes, such as ADAP1 and GIT2, and improves the accuracy of predicting IBD risk by incorporating data from both East Asian and European ancestries.

Summary: This study used Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal relationship between variable risk factors and various nutrients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs). The results showed that certain genetically predicted risk factors and nutrients are associated with the occurrence of IBDs. These findings provide new evidence and suggestions for the treatment and prevention of IBDs.

Nutritional Status and Its Detection in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Beata Jablonska et al.

Summary: Malnutrition is a significant issue in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. It is caused by altered digestion and absorption, inadequate food intake, and drug-nutrient interactions. Malnutrition is associated with an increased risk of infections and poor prognosis in patients with IBDs. It is also related to a higher risk of postsurgery complications.

The cost of inflammatory bowel disease in high-income settings: a Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology Commission

Johan Burisch et al.

Summary: The cost of caring for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) continues to increase worldwide due to the steady increase in prevalence, the chronic nature of the diseases, expensive treatments, intensive monitoring, and their impact on productivity. This Commission urges evaluation of cost increases against improved disease management and the need for data interoperability and big data approaches to assess effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. International collaborations and novel care models should be sought to enhance education and training for clinicians, patients, and policy makers.

Summary: This study explores the validity of the GLIM criteria for identifying malnutrition and investigates the association between malnutrition and quality of life in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The study finds a high prevalence of malnutrition in IBD patients and suggests that the GLIM criteria may be an appropriate and effective tool for identifying malnutrition in this population. Malnutrition has a significant adverse impact on the patients' quality of life.

The findings suggest that alterations in body composition parameters are common in IBD patients, both during active disease and clinical remission, and are associated with poorer prognoses and treatment outcomes. Further investigation and application of body composition parameters have the potential to improve IBD outcomes in the future.

Cancer, Phase Angle and Sarcopenia: The Role of Diet in Connection with Lung Cancer Prognosis

Paraskevi Detopoulou et al.

Summary: Lung cancer, associated with malnutrition and sarcopenia, is the leading cause of cancer death. The measurement of phase angle (PhA) derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) can help identify and manage malnutrition. The relationship between PhA and sarcopenia with lung cancer prognosis involves mechanisms such as inflammation and oxidative stress, but more research is needed to determine critical thresholds.
