Effects of an Optimized Aged Garlic Extract on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in Moderate Hypercholesterolemic Subjects: A Randomized, Crossover, Double-Blind, Sustainedand Controlled Study

Rosa M. Valls et al.

Summary: The study assessed the effect of consuming a standardized black garlic extract with SAC on cardiovascular disease risk factors in individuals with moderate hypercholesterolemia. The results showed that the consumption of ABG extract can reduce diastolic blood pressure, particularly in men. This suggests that consuming ABG may be beneficial for achieving optimal diastolic blood pressure.

Improved microvascular reactivity after aged garlic extract intake is not mediated by hydrogen sulfide in older adults at risk for cardiovascular disease: a randomized clinical trial

Renata Leitao et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of AGE on microvascular reactivity, blood pressure, and urinary thiosulfate levels in older individuals at high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The results showed that AGE improved microvascular reactivity in older adults at risk of CVD, but this effect was not linked with urinary thiosulfate levels.

Effects of Fermented Garlic Extract Containing Nitric Oxide Metabolites on Blood Flow in Healthy Participants: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Ji Soo Baik et al.

Summary: The study found that FGE containing NO2- can improve vascular function, increase blood flow, and enhance regional cerebral blood flow, resulting in an increase in body temperature. No significant side effects were observed in healthy participants during the study, suggesting potential benefits of NO2- containing FGE in regulating circulation.

Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Effects Induced by Allium sativum L. Extracts on an Ex Vivo Experimental Model of Ulcerative Colitis

Lucia Recinella et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the protective effects of garlic extracts on ulcerative colitis and found that they were able to inhibit inflammatory responses, the release of inflammatory mediators, and increase antioxidant substances. These protective effects may be attributed to the polyphenolic composition of garlic.

Regulation of blood pressure by natural sulfur compounds: Focus on their mechanisms of action

Eugenia Piragine et al.

Summary: Natural sulfur compounds, such as garlic polysulfides and isothiocyanates from crucifers, have emerged as promising therapeutic options for hypertension. Their beneficial cardiovascular effects are attributed to the release of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in biological tissue, which induces vasorelaxation. H2S acts on various molecular targets to promote vasodilation, including opening of potassium channels, inhibition of 5-phosphodiesterase, and activation of VEGFR-2. These compounds have novel mechanisms of action and potential as antihypertensive agents.
