Vitamins K and D deficiency in severe motor and intellectually disabled patients

Tomoko Sakai et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC) in severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) patients, and their association with bone turnover biomarkers. Results showed that there was a common co-deficiency of vitamin K and D in SMID patients, with worse deficiencies in tube-fed patients. It is recommended for SMID patients to undergo regular monitoring of vitamin D and K levels and supplementation if needed.

Total energy expenditure among children with motor, intellectual, visual, and hearing disabilities: a doubly labeled water method

Hiroko Ohwada et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the total energy expenditure (TEE) of children with disabilities using the doubly labeled water (DLW) method and compared it by disability type. The results showed that TEE differed depending on the disability type, with the lowest TEE in motor disability (MD) and the highest in hearing disability (HD). Additionally, greater severity of motor dysfunction resulted in lower TEE.

Isolated neutropenia caused by copper deficiency due to jejunal feeding and excessive zinc intake: A case report

Hiromitsu Ohmori et al.

Summary: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy with jejunal extension (PER-J) is commonly used in patients with neurological impairment and swallowing difficulty, but can lead to copper deficiency. This case reported a rare manifestation of isolated neutropenia due to copper deficiency in a 19-year-old patient receiving PER-J feeding. Adjusting supplements and monitoring blood indicators improved both copper deficiency and neutropenia in the patient.
