Outcomes of a Multi-Component School-Based Nutrition Program

Emily M. Melnick et al.

Summary: The Integrated Nutrition Education Program (INEP) is an effective elementary school-based nutrition education program that includes classroom education at the student level, parent education and outreach at the home level, and policy, system, and environmental changes at the school level. Results show that students who participated in the program were more likely to consume vegetable-based recipes and vegetables, and had improvements in self-efficacy, vegetable preference, and knowledge. Through a wellness planning process, schools implemented an average of 3.7 PSE changes per school.

Increasing Fruit and Vegetable Intake of Primary School Children in a Quasi-Randomized Trial: Evaluation of the Three-Year School-Based Multicomponent Intervention

Ana Ilic et al.

Summary: Insufficient consumption of fruit and vegetables was found among primary school children in the City of Zagreb. A three-year school-based multicomponent intervention was conducted, which included classroom workshops, cross-curricular activities, homework challenges, educational posters, parent education, and changes to the school food system. The intervention significantly increased fruit and vegetable intake in the intervention group, with 89% of children achieving the goal of increased intake and 25% more reaching the recommended daily intake of 400g.

Thinness, overweight, and obesity in 6-to 9-year-old children from 36 countries: The World Health Organization European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative-COSI 2015-2017

Angela Spinelli et al.

Summary: The fourth round of the WHO European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative was conducted in 36 countries from 2015-2017, showing great geographic variability in height, weight, and BMI among children aged 6-9. While the prevalence of overweight and obesity was higher in Southern Europe, levels of thinness were relatively low except in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Despite efforts to address it, unhealthy weight status remains an important issue in the WHO European Region.

Summary: This study evaluated the implementation and effectiveness of a health intervention program in rural schools, showing positive impacts on students' nutrition knowledge, attitudes, preferences, MyPlate awareness, and vegetable consumption. The program was seen as beneficial and easy to implement, with few challenges during implementation. Improving knowledge and attitudes through nutrition education and preferences through taste testing have been identified as effective strategies to enhance dietary intake among rural students.
