Neural Correlates of Spatial Navigation in Primate Hippocampus

Dun Mao

Summary: The hippocampus is known to play a significant role in spatial navigation in rodents and bats. However, studies on the spatial behavioral correlates in the primate hippocampus, including humans, are limited. Recent research on freely-moving primates has shown differences in spatial representations compared to rodents. This review examines empirical studies on the neural correlates of spatial navigation in the primate hippocampus, including local field potentials and single units.

Hippocampal-prefrontal interactions during spatial decision-making

Lucas C. S. Tavares et al.

Summary: The study reveals directional information flow between the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex at theta and delta frequencies during spatial decision tasks, with spatial selectivity observed in phase coherence and phase-amplitude cross-frequency coupling.

Anterior-Posterior Hippocampal Dynamics Support Working Memory Processing

Jin Li et al.

Summary: This study recorded intracranial EEG from the anterior and posterior hippocampi in humans to investigate the involvement and functional connections of these subregions in working memory (WM) processing. The results showed elevated low-frequency activity and increased theta/alpha band phase synchronization between anterior and posterior subregions during WM maintenance. Correct WM trials were associated with unidirectional influence from the posterior to the anterior hippocampus, while WM errors were associated with bidirectional interactions between the two subregions. These findings suggest that theta/alpha band synchrony within the hippocampus supports successful WM via a posterior to anterior influence.

Geometry of sequence working memory in macaque prefrontal cortex

Yang Xie et al.

Summary: The neural code underlying sequence working memory involves a regular geometrical organization, where the high-dimensional neural state space during the delay can be decomposed into low-dimensional subspaces storing specific spatial locations at ordinal ranks. The integration of ordinal and spatial information occurs at the collective level across distributed neural groups rather than within single neurons.

The what and when of olfactory working memory in humans

Andrew Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals a novel link between endogenous replay orchestrated by the theta rhythm and short-term retention of sequential memories in the human brain. During encoding, odors time-stamped their positions in the sequence by eliciting greater gamma at distinct theta phases in both regions, while during maintenance, stimulus-driven patterns of theta-coupled gamma were spontaneously reinstated in the piriform cortex, recapitulating the order of the initial sequence.

Altered hippocampal-prefrontal functional network integrity in adult macaque monkeys with neonatal hippocampal lesions

Chun-Xia Li et al.

Summary: The study showed that neonatal hippocampal lesions significantly altered the functional connectivity of H-DLPFC and H-VLPFC in adult monkeys, with a specific impact on working memory performance in the left hemisphere of the brain. This findings provide a potential translational model for developing new therapeutic tools for Schizophrenia.

Prefrontal lesions disrupt oscillatory signatures of spatiotemporal integration in working memory

Summary: This study investigates how the human brain integrates spatial and temporal information to form unified memory representations, with a focus on the role of prefrontal cortex in spatiotemporal integration. The findings suggest both PFC-dependent and independent substrates of spatiotemporal integration, with optimal performance linked to PFC activity.

Substantia Nigra Integrity Correlates with Sequential Working Memory in Parkinson's Disease

Wenyue Liu et al.

Summary: In Parkinson's disease, damage to the substantia nigra may lead to deficits in sequential working memory, mediated by dysfunction in the basal ganglia. Patients showed poorer performance in a digitordering task and smaller SNs compared to healthy controls. The study suggests that SN integrity is crucial for sequencing performance in PD patients.

Theta-phase dependent neuronal coding during sequence learning in human single neurons

Leila Reddy et al.

Summary: Research in the human temporal lobe shows that the timing of neuronal activity relative to theta brain oscillation reflects sequence order. The study found that spikes in three consecutive items in a sequence were phase-locked at distinct phases of the theta oscillation, with spikes being fired at progressively earlier phases as the sequence advanced.
