Effects of Micro-Arc Oxidation Discharge Parameters on Formation and Biomedical Properties of Hydroxyapatite-Containing Flower-like Structure Coatings

Kuan-Ting Chen et al.

Summary: The micro-arc oxidation (MAO) process was used to prepare hydroxyapatite-containing flower-like structure coatings on commercially pure titanium substrates. The morphology of the coatings depended on the applied voltage, with 330 V resulting in a flower-like/plate-like structure, and 390 V and 450 V resulting in a flower-like structure and a porous morphology respectively. The applied current and duration time affected the coating formation speed and petal size of the flower-like structures. The coatings with flower-like/plate-like or flower-like structures exhibited higher roughness, increased hydrophilicity, and superior bioactivity and biocompatibility. The 390 V coating had the optimal biomedical performance due to its flower-like structure and high HA/DCPD ratio.

Characterization and tribological behaviour of Indian clam seashell-derived hydroxyapatite coating applied on titanium alloy by plasma spray technique

Shahid Hussain et al.

Summary: Different hydroxyapatite (HA) powders synthesized from Indian clam seashells at varying temperatures were deposited on titanium alloy using an atmospheric plasma spray process. The coating materials were characterized in terms of crystallite size, Ca/P ratio, crystallinity, microstructure, and phases. The surface roughness, microhardness, porosity, adhesion strength, and wear resistance of the HA coatings were also evaluated. The 900 degrees C coating sample exhibited the highest adhesion strength, microhardness, and wear-resistance properties due to its maximum crystallinity among all the HA coatings.

Development of ceramic coatings on titanium alloy substrate by laser cladding with pre-placed natural derived-slurry: Influence of hydroxyapatite ratio and beam power

Aura-Catalina Mocanu et al.

Summary: The superior mechanical and tribological features of Ti and its alloys make them attractive, but they lack biocompatibility and inertness when implanted in the body for a long time. Surface modification with ceramic coatings is necessary to improve their biomedical features. This study proposed the prospect of coating Ti6Al4V substrates with bovine-bone derived hydroxyapatite (HA) using laser cladding technique. The structural analysis confirmed the formation of calcium titanate as the main phase and the presence of HA only in samples prepared with 100% HA ratio at low to medium laser powers. The optimal technological parameters for ceramic cladded layers with potential compatibility with regenerative medicine applications were determined.

Electrodeposition of Calcium Phosphate Coatings on Metallic Substrates for Bone Implant Applications: A Review

Richard Drevet et al.

Summary: This article provides a summary of over three decades of scientific knowledge on the electrodeposition of calcium phosphate coatings. Electrodeposition is a low-temperature process designed to make metallic bone implants bioactive in a physiological environment. The process involves electrochemical reactions, pH modification, and precipitation of the calcium phosphate coating. However, the deposition process also generates undesired dihydrogen bubbles due to the reduction of water in the electrolyte solution. To address this issue, the use of pulsed current has been suggested as an alternative to traditional direct current, resulting in reduced bubble accumulation and improved properties of the electrodeposited coating. Furthermore, electrodeposition offers the possibility of incorporating ionic substituents into the calcium phosphate lattice to enhance the biological performance of bone implants.

A multifunctional strontium/silver-co-substituted hydroxyapatite derived from biogenic source as antibacterial biomaterial

Summary: Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has bioactive properties that aid in bone regeneration. This study investigates the substitution of Sr2+ and Ag+ ions to enhance the physico-chemical and bioactive properties of HAp, specifically for osseointegration and antibacterial activity in treating traumatic bone injuries. The results show successful substitution of Ca2+ with Sr2+ and Ag+ ions, as confirmed by elemental mapping. The zeta-potential of the substituted HAp decreases with increasing substitution degree, and Ag/Sr-co-substituted HAp exhibits higher absorption capacity for bovine serum albumin. The substituted HAp also demonstrates antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, without cytotoxicity towards human cells.
