Hydration Characteristics and Microstructure of Alkali-Activated Slag Concrete: A Review

Qiang Fu et al.

Summary: Alkali-activated slag concrete (AASC) is a new environmentally friendly building material with significantly lower CO2 emissions compared to ordinary Portland cement concrete (OPCC). It promotes the reuse of slag and other waste materials, expands the scope of slag utilization, and requires further research to overcome constraints in its development, such as complex raw material composition, large shrinkage deformation, and low fluidity.

Strain-hardening alkali-activated fly ash/slag composites with ultra-high compressive strength and ultra-high tensile ductility

Jian-Cong Lao et al.

Summary: This study designed and developed strain-hardening alkali-activated fly ash/slag composites (SH-AAFSC) with remarkable compressive strength and tensile ductility. The research demonstrated a compressive strength of 94.4-180.7 MPa and a tensile strain capacity of 8.1-9.9%, marking a significant advancement in alkali-activated materials. Through a multi-scale investigation, the study revealed the influence of GGBS content and w/p ratio on the microstructure and mechanical properties. Additionally, a strong linear relationship between fiber-bridging strength and the average elastic modulus of matrix was observed. The findings pave the way for producing SH-AAFSC with exceptional performance for resilient and sustainable infrastructures.

Use of biomass wood ash to produce sustainable geopolymeric pastes

Laura Silvestro et al.

Summary: Biomass is a sustainable energy source, and its ash can be used to produce geopolymers as an alternative to Portland cement. This study investigated the production of geopolymer systems with metakaolin (MK) replaced by different biomass wood ashes (WA-A, WA-B, and WA-C). The specific surface area of the ashes played a crucial role in the rheological parameters and hydration kinetics of the geopolymers. Geopolymers with WA-A and WA-C showed comparable compressive strength to the control samples for MK to WA replacement percentages of up to 20% and 10%, respectively. The WA-based geopolymers also exhibited lower CO2 emissions compared to MK.

Effects of treated biomass wood fly ash as a partial substitute for fly ash in a geopolymer mortar system

Fatmanur Ates et al.

Summary: The use of biomass for energy production is common, but the ash produced in the process is a problem. Previous studies have explored using residual biomass ashes in cement-treated materials, but their low properties negatively impact strength. This study investigates treating biomass waste materials for use in concrete made with geopolymer composite as a binder. The results show considerable improvements in the physical and mechanical characteristics of treated mortars.

Study on Shrinkage in Alkali-Activated Slag-Fly Ash Cementitious Materials

Peng Cui et al.

Summary: Traditional silicate cement materials produce a large amount of CO2 during production, making it urgent to seek alternatives. Alkali-activated slag cement is a good substitute with low carbon emissions and energy consumption, and the ability to utilize industrial waste residues. However, the shrinkage of alkali-activated concrete can be larger. This study used slag powder as the raw material and fly ash and fine sand to reduce the shrinkage values of alkali-activated slag cement.

Structural build-up and breakdown of alkali-activated slag pastes with different order of lignosulfonate and activator addition

Vlastimil Bilek et al.

Summary: One of the crucial issues in alkali-activated materials is the application of conventional plasticizers. The efficiency of lignosulfonate plasticizer (LS) varies depending on the type of activator used. The timing of LS and activator addition affects the structural build-up and hydration kinetics of AAS pastes with low-silicate moduli activator.

Accelerating the reaction process of sodium carbonate-activated slag mixtures with the incorporation of a small addition of sodium hydroxide/sodium silicate

Xiaodi Dai et al.

Summary: This paper explores the potential of accelerating the slow early reaction process of sodium carbonate-activated slag mixtures by adding a small amount of sodium hydroxide or sodium silicate to the activator. The reaction process was evaluated using isothermal calorimetry and ultrasonic wave technology. Results showed that the addition of sodium hydroxide or sodium silicate significantly accelerated the reaction process, resulting in shorter setting times and improved mechanical properties. Even a 1% addition of sodium hydroxide led to a compressive strength of 20 MPa for the mixtures. The addition of sodium hydroxide or sodium silicate also impacted the rheological behavior, enhancing structural build-up and transforming the shear-thinning behavior.

Workability, autogenous shrinkage and microstructure of alkali-activated slag/fly ash slurries: Effect of precursor composition and sodium silicate modulus

Ling Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of changes in precursor composition and sodium silicate modulus on the strength and autogenous shrinkage of alkali-activated slag/fly ash slurry, and compares their workability, autogenous shrinkage, and microstructure. The results show that the engineering performance of alkali-activated cementitious materials depends on the constituent materials and their ratios. Increasing the fly ash content enhances the slump and reduces autogenous shrinkage, while increasing the sodium silicate modulus increases the slump and setting time, and reduces early strength.

Summary: Slag, a by-product of the steel industry, can be used as a binder for alkali solutions. This study discusses the microstructural development of two alkali-activated slag mixes for structural applications. Characterization of reaction products was done using various techniques, and the Ca/Si ratio and secondary products were found to depend on the activator solution. Dissolution kinetics was followed by calorimetry and microscopy, and thermodynamic modeling was used to predict phase assemblage.

Summary: This study investigates the bond-behavior and micro properties of the wet-on-wet casting interface of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC)-normal strength concretes. The results show the formation of a hybrid interfacial transition zone between the two types of casted concrete, with the binder matrix combining properties of both concretes. Despite significant differences in shrinkage, no microcracking or delamination was observed in that zone. The flexural and compressive strength of the produced elements were equal to or higher than the weaker of the used concrete.
