Application of BiOX Photocatalyst to Activate Peroxydisulfate Ion-Investigation of a Combined Process for the Removal of Organic Pollutants from Water

Tuende Alapi et al.

Summary: Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes using BiOX photocatalysts have been investigated for the removal of organic pollutants under UV and visible light radiation. BiOI showed higher efficiency in PDS activation compared to BiOBr and BiOCl, and all BiOX catalysts exhibited enhanced activity for 1,4-hydroquinone transformation. The transformation of sulfamethoxypyridazine was driven by direct charge transfer, with a less pronounced effect of PDS. BiOI demonstrated efficient degradation of various organic substances under visible light radiation, and its efficiency was further enhanced by PDS addition.

Impact of Reaction Parameters and Water Matrices on the Removal of Organic Pollutants by TiO2/LED and ZnO/LED Heterogeneous Photocatalysis Using 365 and 398 nm Radiation

Mate Nafradi et al.

Summary: This study compares the application of high-power LED365nm and commercial, low-price LED398nm for heterogeneous photocatalysis with TiO2 and ZnO photocatalysts. The effects of light intensity, photon energy, quantum yield, electrical energy consumption, and matrices and inorganic components on radical formation were investigated. The results show that LED398nm has slower COU conversion rate compared to LED365nm, but significantly higher r(0)(7-HC)/r(0)(COU) ratio. The impact of matrices and inorganic components on the photocatalytic reaction differs for ZnO and TiO2.

Wastewater surveillance of antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens: A systematic review

Ananda Tiwari et al.

Summary: Infectious diseases caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria pose a serious threat to human and animal health. Active surveillance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria using a comprehensive one-health approach can help reduce their emergence and spread, reduce associated economic impacts, and guide antimicrobial stewardship programs. Wastewater surveillance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria provides composite samples for monitoring the total population, making it a promising tool for monitoring these pathogens. However, the clinical utility, sensitivity, and uniformity of wastewater surveillance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria remains poorly understood, especially in relation to clinical evidence in communities.
