Viscoelastic Effects on the Nonlinear Oscillations of Hard-Magnetic Soft Actuators

Shivendra Nandan et al.

Summary: This article aims to develop an analytical dynamic model for a typical planar model of hard-magnetic soft actuators, taking into account the viscoelasticity of the materials. The governing equations of dynamic motion are derived by implementing the nonconservative form of the Euler-Lagrange equation. The effects of viscoelasticity on the nonlinear oscillations of the actuator are investigated through phase-plane portraits, Poincare maps, and time-history response.

Effective Properties of Homogenised Nonlinear Viscoelastic Composites

Alejandro Roque-Piedra et al.

Summary: We propose a general approach to compute the effective properties of nonlinear viscoelastic composites. By using the asymptotic homogenisation technique, the equilibrium equation is decoupled into local problems. We apply this approach to the case of Saint-Venant-type strain energy density with a memory contribution in the second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor. The effective coefficients are computed by specifying different constitutive laws for the memory terms, and the results are compared with existing data in the scientific literature.

Finite strain poro-hyperelasticity: an asymptotic multi-scale ALE-FSI approach supported by ANNs

Hamidreza Dehghani et al.

Summary: This contribution introduces and discusses a formulation of poro-hyperelasticity at finite strains. The formulation considers the time-dependent response of such media, taking into account their multi-scale and multi-physics parameters. The approach involves formulating a non-dimensionalised fluid-solid interaction problem at the pore level and expanding and analysing the resulting systems of PDEs on the reference configuration. The study also proposes a data-driven approach using an artificial neural network to overcome computational challenges.

Characterizing and Engineering Biomimetic Materials for Viscoelastic Mechanotransduction Studies

Ludovica Cacopardo et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior of soft tissue extracellular matrix is time dependent and evolves over time due to physiological processes, aging, and disease. The review discusses measurement techniques and models for determining the viscoelastic properties of soft hydrated materials, highlighting the importance of understanding cell response to time-dependent mechanical cues.

Effect of geometrical structure variations on the viscoelastic and anisotropic behaviour of cortical bone using multi-scale finite element modelling

Ampaiphan Atthapreyangkul et al.

Summary: Multi-scale finite element analysis was conducted to investigate the impact of geometrical changes on the mechanical properties of cortical bone at different structural scales. The study incorporated statistical approaches and sensitivity analyses, revealing an exponential correlation between mineral volume fraction and effective stiffness constants at each length scale. Fast and slow response relaxation behavior of cortical bone was found to be influenced by bone's structural anisotropy and global mineral volume fraction variations between length scales.

Hamidreza Dehghani et al.

Summary: This study presents an incremental numerical approach for modelling poroelastic media under finite strain and large deformation, considering the rearrangement of cell properties and interdependency between macro and micro scales. It provides a more accurate predictive analysis for fluid-saturated porous media through numerical consolidation examples.

Homogenized Balance Equations for Nonlinear Poroelastic Composites

Laura Miller et al.

Summary: In this work, equations describing the pore-scale behavior of nonlinear porous elastic composites are scaled up using the asymptotic homogenization technique to derive effective governing equations at the macroscale. A new porohyperelastic model is developed to describe the effective behavior of nonlinear porous composites, taking into account the detailed microstructure and interactions between various hyperelastic solid phases at the pore-scale.

Effective governing equations for heterogenous porous media subject to inhomogeneous body forces

Raimondo Penta et al.

Summary: This study presents a new homogenized model for heterogeneous porous media by decoupling spatial variations and assuming periodicity at the fine scale to obtain a well-defined coarse scale Darcy-type model. The model can be used to predict the effects of externally applied magnetic (or electric) fields on ferrofluids (or electrolytes) flowing in porous media.
