Microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture toughness of ECAPed magnesium matrix composite reinforced with hydroxyapatite ceramic particulates for bioabsorbable implants

M. Kasaeian-Naeini et al.

Summary: Employing ceramic particles like hydroxyapatite to fabricate magnesium-based bio-composite has attracted significant attention in orthopedic applications due to their bioactivity and biocompatibility. The combination of hydroxyapatite particles and the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) process has shown improved microstructure, mechanical properties, and fracture toughness of the Mg/HA bio-composites. Through microstructural observation, mechanical tests, and digital image correlation (DIC) analysis, it was found that the addition of hydroxyapatite particles and the ECAP process led to decreased grain size, enhanced mechanical strength, and improved resistance against crack growth in the bio-composites. The four-pass ECAPed bio-composite showed the highest fracture toughness, approximately 28 MPa m0.5, 70% higher than pure Mg.

Summary: Magnesium alloy is a third-generation biomedical material that promotes bone tissue regeneration. It has the advantages of biodegradability, closer Young's modulus to human bone, osteoinductive and antimicrobial properties. However, its rapid corrosion rate and mechanical integrity compromise pose challenges for bone implantation. Various machining, alloying, and optimization techniques are used to improve the properties of magnesium implants. The review also investigates the corrosion and wear behavior of magnesium alloys and the impact of coating on biocompatibility and corrosion properties.

Detailing the influence of PEO-coated biodegradable Mg-based implants on the lacuno-canalicular network in sheep bone: A pilot study

Jonathan Espiritu et al.

Summary: The increasing prevalence of bone-related injuries and aging geriatric populations are driving the growth of the orthopaedic implant market. A hierarchical analysis of bone remodelling after material implantation is necessary to understand the relationship between implant and bone. Osteocytes play a vital role in bone health and remodelling processes, making it essential to examine the lacuno-canalicular network (LCN) in response to implant materials. Biodegradable materials, such as magnesium alloys, offer a potential solution to permanent implants, and surface treatments like plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) can slow degradation. This study investigates the impact of PEO-coated WE43 on the LCN using nondestructive 3D imaging, and the findings suggest that slower degradation induced by PEO-coating results in healthier lacunar shapes within the LCN.

Investigating the combined effects of wide stacking faults and grain size on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of high-purity Mg

Qingyun Fu et al.

Summary: This work investigates the effects of wide stacking faults (SFs) and grain size on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of high-purity Mg. The results show that symmetrical rotary swaging can refine the Mg grain and eliminate wide SFs, while annealing introduces high-density wide SFs into coarsened grains. Grain refinement leads to increased strength and corrosion resistance, while high-density SFs improve the strength of high-purity Mg. The findings provide new approaches for enhancing the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of high-purity Mg.
