Effects of Al and La elements on mechanical properties of CoNiFe0.6Cr0.6 high-entropy alloys: a first-principles study

Xu Wang et al.

Summary: The effects of Al and La elements on the mechanical properties of CoNiFe0.6Cr0.6 high-entropy alloys with a face-centered cubic structure were investigated using first-principles calculations. The study discussed in detail the variations of various physical parameters as a function of Al and La concentration. The results showed that the resistance to deformation decreased with the increase of Al and La concentration, while the plasticity and ductility of the alloys improved. The addition of Al and La also strengthened the metallic characteristic of atomic bonding and increased the material's anisotropy.

Entropic stabilization and descriptors of structural transformation in high entropy alloys

Narendra Kumar et al.

Summary: Through first-principles theoretical analysis of the local structure using Bond-Orientational Order parameters and Voronoi partitioning, we discovered a HCP to BCC structural transformation in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) Nbx(HfZrTi)y at 16% Nb-concentration, with internal lattice distortions (ILDs) peaking at the transition. We demonstrated that the relative stability of HCP and BCC structures is determined by energetics, while the overall stability is achieved through the contribution of vibrational entropy surpassing the configurational entropy of mixing. We also showed that along with atomic size mismatch, a low average number of valence electrons (< 5), and a disparity in the crystal structures of constituent elements, contribute to larger ILDs in Nbx(HfZrTi)y compared to HEAs like NbaMobWcTad.

Microstructural, Mechanical, and Electrochemical Characterization of CrMoNbTiZr High-Entropy Alloy for Biomedical Application

Akeem Akinwekomi et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloy based on biocompatible metals, CrMoNbTiZr, was successfully consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS), producing a dense material with a relative sintered density of about 97% of the theoretical density. The microstructure of the sintered HEA consisted of a BCC matrix and Laves phase, in agreement with the thermodynamic CALPHAD simulation. The HEA exhibited excellent mechanical properties, bio-corrosion resistance, and wear resistance, making it a promising biomaterial.

Aluminium Matrix Composites Reinforced with AlCrFeMnNi HEA Particulates: Microstructure, Mechanical and Corrosion Properties

Elias A. Ananiadis et al.

Summary: Novel aluminium matrix composites with high entropy alloy reinforcement phase particles were fabricated and studied for their microstructure, mechanical properties, and response to wear and corrosion. It was found that no secondary intermetallic phases were formed in the microstructure. The hardness and wear resistance of the composites increased with the increase in high entropy alloy particles, while the composites exhibited susceptibility to localized corrosion. Nanoindentation techniques and creep response provided insights into the deformation nature of the materials.

Investigation of the Microstructure of Sintered Ti-Al-C Composite Powder Materials under High-Voltage Electrical Discharge

Rasa Kandrotaite Janutiene et al.

Summary: Dispersion-hardened materials based on TiC-AlnCn were synthesized using spark plasma sintering, resulting in high heat resistance, strength, and durability for use as a hard lubricant in aircraft and rocket technology. By processing composite powders of Ti, Al, and MAX-phases through high-voltage electrical discharge, nanosized particles were obtained. This method allows for efficient, energy-saving, and waste-reducing production of materials with improved mechanical and physical properties. The synthesized composites exhibited a microhardness of approximately 500-600 HV, with a titanium matrix reinforced by intermetallic phases and carbide clusters.

Effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a dual phase Al14Co41Cr15Fe10Ni20 high entropy alloy

Ali Shafiei et al.

Summary: The microstructure and mechanical properties of Al14Co41Cr15Fe10Ni20 high entropy alloy were investigated in this study. The alloy exhibited a dual phase microstructure composed of dendritic solid solution FCC phase and an interdendritic B2 (BCC) phase, both in as-cast and homogenized states. Aging treatments at temperatures in the range of 750°C-1000°C resulted in the uniform distribution of precipitates throughout the alloy. The mechanical tests showed that the room temperature properties of the alloy were comparable to commercial Co-based alloys, but the high temperature ductility was poor. These findings contribute to the development of high entropy alloys with dual phase FCC/B2 microstructures.

The improvement of room temperature plasticity of refractory high entropy alloy based on different first principles calculation models and experiment verification

Yu Gao et al.

Summary: The limited ductility of Refractory High Entropy Alloy (RHEA) at room temperature hinders its widespread application. However, predicting and optimizing their properties is challenging due to the complex composition of High Entropy Alloys (HEAs). First principles calculation is an efficient method for predicting material properties, and three modeling methods, namely Supercell (SC), Special quasi-random structure (SQS) and Virtual crystal approximation (VCA), are commonly used for high entropy alloys. By studying the effects of Ti and Ta contents on the mechanical properties of NbMoTaTiV, it was found that increasing Ti and decreasing Ta contributed to enhanced toughness of the alloy.
