Facile fabrication of NiO foam@Sn-doped In2O3 nanowire heterosturctures for highly sensitive ethylene glycol gas sensors at low temperatures

Xukun Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a p-type nickel oxide foam/n-type tin-doped indium oxide nanowires composite was fabricated for ethylene glycol gas sensing, which showed a unique response to 100 ppm ethylene glycol at a low temperature of 125 degrees C, along with fast response/recovery time. The excellent gas-sensitive performance of the composite can be attributed to the formation of p/n heterojunctions and the In and Sn doping of NiO during ITO growth. This fabrication method provides an effective strategy for building NiO-based heterostructures for high-performance gas sensors.

Estacio P. de Araujo et al.

Summary: This study reports the fabrication of a nanobelt-based SnO2 gas sensor, in which the electrical contacts to nanobelts are self-assembled. The nanobelts were grown using the vapor-solid-liquid (VLS) growth mechanism with gold as the catalytic site. The sensor characteristics were tested for the detection of CO and CO2 gases, showing improved response, response time, and recovery with increasing temperature and surface decoration using Pd nanoparticles, making them important candidates for human health detection.

Summary: Thermal oxidation is a simple and low-cost method for growing oxide nanostructures, different from evaporation-deposition techniques, but typically does not lead to the formation of complex heterostructures or ternary oxides. Applying an external electric field during thermal oxidation or heating the sample via Joule effect can improve control over nanowire dimensions.

Summary: This study investigated conductometric gas sensors based on p-type alpha-Bi2O3 nanowires for detecting low concentrations of acetone and ethanol. The sensors exhibited excellent sensing performances including high response, fast kinetics, long-term stability, and good selectivity at different humidity levels. The synthesis of alpha-Bi2O3 nanowires using a Vapor-Liquid-Solid method resulted in nanowires with superior aspect ratio when using gold as the catalyst, leading to extra sensitization caused by the spillover effect of gold nanoparticles.
