An update on lipid apheresis for familial hypercholesterolemia

Christina Taylan et al.

Summary: Familial hypercholesterolemia is a genetic metabolic disorder that leads to high cholesterol levels from birth onwards. Early detection and aggressive lipid-lowering therapies are important in severe cases. Medications and therapeutic apheresis can be used in children to reduce cholesterol levels.

Simple emulsion template method towards self-anticoagulant and high-efficiency carboxymethyl chitosan-based adsorbent for low-density lipoprotein from whole blood

Yinghui Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, carboxymethyl chitosan-based double cross-linked network spheres are constructed using an emulsion template method. These spheres, called ECMCS@AMPSs, have a porous structure with a large pore area (58.3 m2/g) and ultra-high porosity (92.3%). They exhibit excellent anticoagulant properties and high adsorption capacity for low-density lipoprotein (LDL) without activating the complement system, contact system, and platelets. Moreover, the ECMCS@AMPSs show a significantly higher cumulative adsorption capacity for LDL compared to high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Overall, the ECMCS@AMPSs fabricated through the emulsion template method have promising clinical applications in lipoprotein apheresis.

Amphiphilic Alginate-Based Layer-by-Layer Coatings Exhibiting Resistance against Nonspecific Protein Adsorption and Marine Biofouling

Thuvarakhan Gnanasampanthan et al.

Summary: Amphiphilic polysaccharides were fabricated by coupling hydrophobic PFPA to hydrophilic alginic acid, and their resistance against protein adsorption and marine fouling organisms was explored. The amphiphilic multilayers exhibited higher resistance towards protein adsorption and microfouling marine organisms compared to multilayers without fluoroalkyl groups.

Biomembrane-mimetic hemoperfusion adsorbent for efficient removal of low-density lipoprotein from hyperlipemia blood

Yameng Yu et al.

Summary: A biomembrane-mimetic LDL adsorbent has been developed, which can effectively remove LDL and total cholesterol while maintaining high-density lipoprotein within the normal range. The adsorbent also exhibits excellent blood compatibility and anticoagulant properties, making it a promising treatment option for hyperlipidaemia.

Control of Specific/Nonspecific Protein Adsorption: Functionalization of Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films as a Potential Coating for Biosensors

Tomasz Kruk et al.

Summary: Controlling nonspecific/specific protein adsorption is essential in the design of novel biomaterials, implants, drug delivery systems, and sensors. This can be achieved through proper surface modification and functional coatings. The use of polyelectrolyte coatings in a layer-by-layer technique can help minimize nonspecific protein adsorption and enable specific protein adsorption for various biotechnological applications.

Rapid separation of blood plasma exosomes from low-density lipoproteins via a hydrophobic interaction chromatography method on a polyester capillary-channeled polymer fiber phase

Sisi Huang et al.

Summary: Exosomes, membrane-bound vesicles secreted by cells, are proposed as measurable indicators of disease in blood plasma. Current methods for isolating exosomes from plasma are complex and costly, often resulting in co-extraction of lipoproteins. A new rapid hydrophobic interaction chromatography method shows promise in efficiently purifying exosomes while excluding LDLs.
