Investigation of Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Ultra-High Strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu Alloy Prepared by Rapid Solidification and Hot Extrusion

Gaoliang Shen et al.

Summary: This study prepared a high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu aluminum alloy using rapid solidification and hot extrusion, and analyzed the improvement mechanism of the alloy's microstructure. The results showed that rapid solidification technology could significantly refine the alloy grain. After hot extrusion, the alloy partially recrystallized and formed coarse second-phase and needle-shaped precipitates. After T6 heat treatment, the alloy's tensile strength reached 635.8 MPa, but the elongation decreased to 10.5%. It was found that precipitation strengthening was the main strengthening mechanism.

Adhesive Bonding of an Aluminum Alloy with and without an Oxide Layer in Atmospheres with Different Oxygen Contents

Sandra Gerland et al.

Summary: Aluminum surfaces are always covered with a native oxide layer in a normal atmosphere. To prevent the formation of a new layer after removing this oxide layer, an oxygen-free environment must be created. This study uses a new method of doping an inert gas atmosphere with highly reactive silane to ensure the absence of oxygen. The influence of the surrounding atmosphere and the oxide layer on the tensile strength of an aluminum-aluminum joint is investigated.

Precipitation on grain boundaries in Al-Mg-Si alloys: The role of grain boundary misorientation

Zhijun Zhang et al.

Summary: The application of Al-Mg-Si alloys in fracture critical applications is increasing, and the formation of grain boundary precipitates plays an important role in controlling low energy intergranular fracture. The study shows that precipitates on high angle grain boundaries are approximately 3 times larger than those formed on low angle boundaries. The size of grain boundary precipitates decreases by a factor of 3 with increasing cooling rate, and almost no precipitates are observed at a cooling rate of 1000 degrees C/s. However, grain boundary precipitation is still observed during subsequent artificial ageing.
