Crack-parallel stress effect on fracture energy of plastic hardening polycrystalline metal identified from gap test scaling

A. Abdullah Donmez et al.

Summary: The gap test is a new type of fracture test that was developed in 2020. It uses a notched beam with end supports that have gaps. The test measures how a constant crack-parallel compression stress affects the material's fracture energy and fracture process zone. The importance rating for this study is 8 out of 10.

Provision of Rational Parameters for the Turning Mode of Small-Sized Parts Made of the 29 NK Alloy and Beryllium Bronze for Subsequent Thermal Pulse Deburring

Nikita V. Martyushev et al.

Summary: The increase in the use of physical and technical processing methods in deburring technologies is due to the need to work with difficult-to-machine materials and produce small-sized products with hard-to-reach surfaces. This study aims to improve the blade processing of beryllium bronze and the 29 NK alloy for thermal pulse deburring. Surface samples were analyzed and empirical regression dependencies were established to determine rational cutting mode parameters for deburring with the thermal pulse method.

Research and TLS (LiDAR) Construction Diagnostics of Clay Brick Masonry Arched Stairs

Rafal Nowak et al.

Summary: The study presents a TLS diagnostic of a clay brick masonry arched staircase in a historic building. Experimental models were made to analyze the influence of the masonry steps on the load capacity and stiffness of the run structure. The results showed that the treads above the masonry arch were the key element responsible for the load-bearing capacity and stiffness of this type of stair flights.

A new ductile failure criterion for micro/meso scale forming limit prediction of metal foils considering size effect and free surface roughening

Lihuang Zheng et al.

Summary: A new ductile failure criterion is proposed in this paper to accurately predict the forming limits of metal foils affected by size effect. Experimental results and comparative research demonstrate the prediction capability of the proposed failure criterion in micro/meso scale forming processes.

Size effects in the uniaxial compressive properties of 3D printed models of rocks: an experimental investigation

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: Transparent physical models fabricated using 3D printing technology are used to study the evolution of internal stress and deformation fields of rocks, providing quantitative insights into the intrinsic mechanisms of rock failure. This study investigates the size effect in 3D printed models of fractured and porous rocks, and reveals the influence of internal discontinuous structural features on the mechanical behavior of the model.

The scale effect in composites: An explanation physically based on the different mechanisms of damage involved in failure

F. Paris et al.

Summary: The scale effect in composites is influenced by the thickness of the lamina, affecting the strength of the laminate. This study provides a physically based explanation of the scale effect by identifying two different failure mechanisms, progressive and explosive, in the 90-degree lamina. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial for identifying the parameters involved in failure initiation.

SPH-DEM simulations of saturated granular soils liquefaction incorporating particles of irregular shape

Saman Farzi Sizkow et al.

Summary: A coupled SPH and DEM scheme is used to study liquefaction of saturated granular deposits during strong seismic ground motions. Results indicate that excess pore fluid pressure increases due to contraction of pore spaces, leading to significant loss of interparticle contacts and degradation of soil strength and stiffness.

Source modelling and stress transfer scenarios of the October 30, 2020 Samos earthquake: seismotectonic implications

Sotiris Sboras et al.

Summary: This study aims to define the seismic source of the mainshock by integrating seismological and geodetic data, as well as field observations, identifying a N-dipping normal fault. The spatiotemporal evolution of the aftershock sequence was then studied, revealing the involvement of multiple faults beyond the Kaystrios fault.
