PCOS and Depression: Common Links and Potential Targets

Jagruti V. Kolhe et al.

Summary: PCOS, a common endocrine disorder in females, is associated with an increase in depression incidence, leading to a significant impact on quality of life. Low self-esteem in PCOS patients may be attributed to factors such as obesity and acne. The overlapping clinical symptoms between depression and PCOS suggest a potential common relationship.

Polycystic ovary syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus: A state-of-the-art review

Sarantis Livadas et al.

Summary: This review discusses the epidemiology and pathophysiology of dysglycemia in PCOS, as well as the assessment methods and risk factors for T2D development in this population. It also provides recommendations for holistic management of T2D risk in PCOS, including adopting a healthy lifestyle, improving dietary patterns, avoiding endocrine-disrupting substances, regular exercise, and certain medications. Maintaining a healthy weight is highlighted as a key factor in reducing T2D risk in women with PCOS.

Comorbidity of Novel CRHR2 Gene Variants in Type 2 Diabetes and Depression

Mutaz Amin et al.

Summary: Variants of the CRHR2 gene are associated with the risk of depression and type 2 diabetes. This study identified novel risk variants related to depression and type 2 diabetes in 212 Italian families. The findings suggest that CRHR2 plays a stronger role in the risk of depression than in the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Cortisol and polycystic ovarian syndrome - a systematic search and meta-analysis of case-control studies

Jiby Jolly Benjamin et al.

Summary: The systematic review and meta-analysis on cortisol and PCOS reveals that cortisol levels are significantly higher in PCOS patients compared to healthy controls, particularly in blood samples. This suggests that cortisol may play an important role in the pathogenesis of PCOS.
