Recent Advances in Forest Insect Pests and Diseases Monitoring Using UAV-Based Data: A Systematic Review

Summary: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly used for forest insect pest and disease (FIPD) monitoring, providing flexibility, cost efficiency, and high-resolution remotely sensed data. This review summarizes recent contributions and identifies knowledge gaps in UAV remote sensing for FIPD monitoring. A systematic review of 49 studies published between 2015 and 2021 reveals an increasing number of papers on this topic, with most studies conducted in China and Europe. The main FIPDs studied were pine wilt disease and bark beetles, and multispectral and red-green-blue bands were preferred for monitoring. Random forest and deep learning classifiers were the most frequently applied analytical methods in UAV imagery processing.
