A new test of dynamical dark energy models and cosmic tensions in Hoava gravity

Eleonora Di Valentino et al.

Summary: This study proposes a renormalizable, higher derivative, Lorentz-violating quantum gravity model without ghost problems known as Hoava gravity. Furthermore, a Hoava gravity-based dark energy (HDE) model is proposed by identifying the additional contributions from Lorentz-violating terms as an effective energy-momentum tensor in Einstein equation. The results show a preference for non-flat universes in the cosmic microwave background, baryon acoustic oscillation, and supernova Ia data tests, aligning with the cosmic concordance model.

On the Resilience of Black Hole Evaporation: Gravitational Tunneling through Universal Horizons

M. Schneider et al.

Summary: Using a quantum tunneling derivation, the resilience of Hawking radiation in Lorentz violating gravity is demonstrated. The standard derivation of the Hawking effect in relativistic quantum field theory is extended to Lorentz breaking situations by the presence of universal horizons. Correcting previous studies, the universal horizons are found to have a temperature governed by their surface gravity. The consistency of quantum field theories across causal boundaries is suggested to be linked to the robustness of black hole thermodynamics.

Rotating black holes in Einstein-aether theory

Alexander Adam et al.

Summary: This paper introduces new methods to construct stationary axisymmetric black hole solutions in Einstein-aether theory and analyze their properties. The regularity at different wave mode horizons, such as spin-2, 1, and 0, is a significant technical challenge. The results show that the metric horizon and wave mode horizons are not Killing horizons, and they have null generators which spiral from pole to equator. The study also reveals regions of viable theory with large coupling parameters.

Gravitational tunneling in Lorentz violating gravity

F. Del Porro et al.

Summary: Black holes in gravity theories with Lorentz violation, such as Einstein-Aether or Ho.rava-Lifshitz gravity, have significant differences compared to their counterparts in general relativity. While allowing for superluminal motion, they still possess an absolute causal boundary known as a universal horizon. By studying the tunneling picture of a gravitating scalar field, we demonstrate that universal horizons in Lorentz violating theories emit Hawking radiation similar to the standard results in general relativity, with the temperature being determined by the high-energy behavior of the dispersion relation. This result is consistent with alternative derivations found in the literature and strengthens the link between the universal horizon and thermodynamics in Lorentz violating theories.

Beta functions of (3+1)-dimensional projectable Horava gravity

Andrei O. Barvinsky et al.

Summary: By calculating the divergent part of the one-loop effective action in a static background, we derive the full set of beta functions for the marginal essential couplings of projectable Horava gravity in (3 + 1)-dimensional spacetime. The calculation involves reducing the problem to three dimensions, extracting an operator square root, evaluating its trace using universal functional traces, and performing the calculation in four different gauges. We also validate the calculation by evaluating the effective action on a special background using an alternative method.

Lifshitz scaling, ringing black holes, and superradiance

Naritaka Oshita et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ringdown waveform and reflectivity of a Lifshitz scalar field around a fixed Schwarzschild black hole, finding that Lifshitz waves scattered by the black hole exhibit superradiance due to Lorentz breaking terms leading to superluminal propagation. This can allow Lifshitz waves to carry additional positive energy to infinity while leaving negative energy inside the Killing horizon, similar to the Penrose process in Kerr spacetime. The study also observes the emergence of long-lived quasinormal modes and drastic modifications to the greybody factor of a microscopic black hole with Hawking temperature comparable to the Lifshitz energy scale.

Hawking radiation from universal horizons

Mario Herrero-Valea et al.

Summary: The persistence of a suitable notion of black hole thermodynamics in Lorentz breaking theories of gravity is not only a non-trivial consistency test, but it also helps in identifying key features governing these laws. This study presented two complementary derivations of Hawking radiation in geometries with universal horizons, showing that the Hawking temperature is set by the generalized universal horizon peeling surface gravity. Compatibility with alternative derivations and the significance for the survival of the generalized second law of black hole thermodynamics in Lorentz breaking theories of gravity are also discussed.

BFV quantization of the nonprojectable (2+1)-dimensional Horava theory

Jorge Bellorin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the implementation of the BFV quantization scheme in the nonprojectable (2 + 1)-Horava theory, allowing for the imposition of more general gauge conditions. The special features of the Hamiltonian density and the matrix of second-class constraints play a crucial role in achieving involutiveness of the system in terms of Dirac brackets, a nontrivial requisite for implementing the BFV formalism.

Relation between general relativity and a class of Horava gravity theories

Nicola Franchini et al.

Summary: Violations of Lorentz invariance can lead to gravity becoming renormalizable in the UV, as observed by Horava, but are increasingly constrained in the IR. Experimental bounds suggest that Horava gravity is consistent with general relativity in many aspects, but there are puzzling discrepancies that may require further investigation, possibly from a cosmological perspective.
