Future weather generator for building performance research: An open-source morphing tool and an application

Eugenio Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Mathematical morphing is commonly used to generate future weather files for building energy simulation, but current tools have limitations in accuracy and availability. This paper presents an open-source morphing tool that can generate future hourly weather data for building performance simulation. The tool was applied to an office building in Portugal, showing significant reductions in thermal energy needs for heating and increases for cooling. The study concluded that HVAC energy needs may decrease in heating-dominated climates.

Climatic change impacts on the energy requirements for the built environment sector

Furqan Tahir et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on analyzing recent studies on the impact of climate change on energy consumption in the built environment. It examines and discusses accepted approaches and projections of building energy change. The survey shows that estimations of heating/cooling loads are significantly influenced by building type, city, and other regional factors. Finally, the challenges associated with predicting building energy requirements are presented and discussed.

Energy, economic and comfort optimization of building retrofits considering climate change: A simulation-based NSGA-III approach

Farzad Mostafazadeh et al.

Summary: Improving building energy performance is challenging due to the investigation of various energy retrofit measures and contrasting objectives, especially in Iran with heavily subsidized energy prices. This research proposes a simulation-based multi-objective optimization approach called prNSGA-III, integrating EnergyPlus and MATLAB to explore retrofit measures and maximize environmental performance while minimizing thermal discomfort and life cycle cost. Applied to a residential building in Tehran, the method shows substantial improvements in environmental performance and reduction in CO-eq emissions and thermal discomfort, at the expense of increased life cycle cost. Climate change also affects optimal solutions, particularly heating and cooling systems.

Climate change and ideal thermal transmittance of residential buildings in Iran

Eugenio Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Climate change will lead to hotter and drier climate in Iran, causing potential underperformance of high-performance buildings optimized for the current climate. This study examines the ideal thermal transmittance of building envelopes under current and future climate scenarios in Iran, identifying varying impacts and necessary changes in different regions. The findings highlight the importance of incorporating climate projections in design assessment and implementing building codes that consider climate change impacts.

Multistage Optimization toward a Nearly Net Zero Energy Building Due to Climate Change

Kimiya Aram et al.

Summary: This study examines the effectiveness of a specific energy-optimized design in responding to future climate change under current climate conditions, offering insights into retrofitting buildings to achieve nearly zero energy consumption. The findings highlight the importance of designing buildings based on future weather files, as optimizing for present weather files may not remain optimal in the future. Additionally, the use of PV panels can enable a building to become nearly net zero, producing the majority of its own energy.
