Sex differences in the associations of body size and body shape with platelets in the UK Biobank cohort

Sofia Christakoudi et al.

Summary: Obesity is associated with low-grade inflammation and increased risk of venous thromboembolism, but the associations with platelet count and body shape are unclear. This study used different body shape indices to evaluate the associations of body mass index (BMI), allometric body shape index (ABSI), and hip index (HI) with platelet count and size. The results showed that the associations vary between different groups and factors such as sex, age, alcohol consumption, and smoking play a role.

Role of Nuclear Receptors in Controlling Erythropoiesis

Valentina Pastori et al.

Summary: Nuclear receptors (NRs) are a family of ligand-regulated transcription factors involved in various physiological processes. They act as transcriptional activators or repressors upon DNA binding and can be modulated by small molecules. Understanding the role of NRs in erythropoiesis is crucial for disease treatment and blood cell culture research.

Associations of body shape index (ABSI) and hip index with liver, metabolic, and inflammatory biomarkers in the UK Biobank cohort

Sofia Christakoudi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates associations between metabolic biomarkers and body shape as measured by waist and hip size, while inflammatory biomarkers were only associated with waist size. This suggests that different mechanistic pathways may contribute to body shape.

How Is Body Composition and Nutrition Status Associated with Erythropoietin Response in Hemodialyzed Patients? A Single-Center Prospective Cohort Study

Wiktoria Feret et al.

Summary: The study investigated the association between nutritional status and erythropoietin responsiveness in end-stage kidney disease patients undergoing renal replacement therapy. Factors such as low BMI, visceral fat volume, and high IL-6 serum levels were found to be linked to high EPO resistance. Prevention of inflammatory malnutrition is crucial in the holistic approach to anemia treatment in dialysis patients.

Prevalence and correlates of overweight and obesity in 12 European Countries in 2017-2018

Chiara Stival et al.

Summary: Based on the data from the TackSHS survey, this study provides updated estimates of the prevalence and determinants of overweight and obesity in Europe. The results show that overweight and obesity are highly prevalent in Europe, particularly in Eastern and Northern European countries. Moreover, there has been an increasing trend in obesity prevalence in these regions compared to 2010.

Anaemia and its risk factors and association with treatments in patients with diabetes: A cross-sectional study

M. Briere et al.

Summary: This study found that anemia is common in diabetic patients and closely associated with renal failure. Female gender and longer duration of diabetes are risk factors for anemia. The use of antiplatelet agents and renin-angiotensin system blockers (RASBs) is associated with an increased risk of anemia in diabetic patients.

A Tale of Three Systems: Toward a Neuroimmunoendocrine Model of Obesity

Conan J. O. O'Brien et al.

Summary: The prevalence of obesity is increasing, now recognized as a complex condition driven by neuro- and immunopathologies. Leptin has pleiotropic effects in addition to its role in appetite modulation, with altered neural circuitry in obesity. Adipose tissue macrophages play crucial roles in organismal energy homeostasis in obesity.

The hematologic consequences of obesity

Summary: Obesity leads to low-grade inflammation, increasing white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets, and thrombotic risk, particularly in association with venous thromboembolism. The link between obesity, iron deficiency, and red blood cell counts remains uncertain.
