Formation of Fe(IV) over a wide pH range via iron-carbon composite-catalyzed persulfate activation

Hong Li et al.

Summary: Fe(IV) formation and PS activation in biochar/PS systems under a wide range of pH conditions were investigated using Fe-BC250. It was found that Fe-BC250/PS system showed superior performance in contaminant removal under alkaline conditions due to the slow release of Fe2+ and the formation of Fe(IV). This study provides new insights into Fe(IV) formation mechanism and highlights the potential application of low-cost iron-carbon composites in water treatment.

Activation of sulfite by micron-scale iron-carbon composite for metronidazole degradation: Theoretical and experimental studies

Zixuan Zhao et al.

Summary: In recent years, sulfite (S(IV)) has been used as an alternative to persulfates to remove antibiotics in wastewater. However, there is a need for a cheap, environmentally friendly, and effective catalyst. This study used a micron-scale iron-carbon composite (mZVI@C-800) coupled with S(IV) to degrade metronidazole (MNZ). The results showed that the MNZ removal rate reached 81.5% under optimized reaction conditions. The introduction of carbon enhanced the corrosion of mZVI, releasing more Fe2+ and improving the efficiency.

Bifunctional catalysts for heterogeneous electro-Fenton processes: a review

Yuanyuan Yao et al.

Summary: This article reviews bifunctional catalysts for heterogeneous electro-Fenton processes. The generation mechanism of oxidizing radicals from oxygen is described, and different types of bifunctional catalysts are compared based on their elemental compositions. Additionally, five other methods beyond electrocatalysts that can improve the performance of heterogeneous electro-Fenton processes are presented.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by WTRs-based iron-carbon composites for atrazine removal: Performance evaluation, mechanism insight and byproduct analysis

Xiaowan Li et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized iron-carbon composites using water treatment residuals, which were then applied for the degradation of the herbicide atrazine. Various reactive radicals, including sulfate radical and singlet oxygen, were found to be involved in the degradation process. Additionally, the presence of chlorine ions was found to have a dual effect on the degradation of atrazine and the production of chlorinated byproducts.

Removal of cadmium from wastewater by magnetic zeolite synthesized from natural, low-grade molybdenum

Zhen-dong Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, magnetic zeolite was synthesized for cadmium adsorption by adding nano ferroferric oxide, which enhanced the magnetic property of zeolite. The saturation magnetization and adsorption capacity of magnetic zeolite were influenced by the amount of nano ferroferric oxide added and pH value.

Characteristic, hazard and iron recovery technology of red mud-A critical review

Xiao Liu et al.

Summary: This paper systematically reviews the iron recovery methods for high-iron RM, dividing them into physical separation, pyrometallurgy (reduction smelting and reduction roasting), and hydrometallurgy (acid leaching). The basic principles and effects of these technologies are summarized, as well as the advantages and disadvantages. Feasibility and economic cost are identified as main factors restricting industrial application.

Synthesis of mixed phase crystalline CoNi2S4 nanomaterial and selective mechanism for adsorption of Congo red from aqueous solution

Arif Chowdhury et al.

Summary: Calcination is crucial for obtaining crystalline nanomaterial with well-developed morphologies. Crystalline CoNi2S4 was synthesized through sulfuration reactions and calcination at different temperatures, leading to increased crystallinity and size. The nanomaterial exhibited selective adsorption of congo red, displaying high adsorption capacity and fitting well with pseudo-first-order kinetics and modified Zhu and Gu isotherm models. The adsorption mechanism involved hydrogen bonding, metal coordination, and pi-pi interactions between the dye molecules and the adsorbent.
