Chlorination for low-cost household water disinfection-A critical review and status in three Latin American countries

A. M. Nielsen et al.

Summary: Chlorination has been commonly used for providing safe drinking water, but there are challenges in effective implementation. A literature review focusing on three Latin American countries found that guidance on household-based chlorination may not incentivize users enough. Moreover, variations in water quality are often overlooked in recommending chlorine doses. User preferences, chlorine product quality, and availability also pose barriers to the sustainable use of chlorination.

Derivates variation of phenylalanine as a model disinfection by-product precursor during long term chlorination and chloramination

Summary: Nitrogenous organic matter in water can lead to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), especially nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs). Amino acids in source water can react with disinfectants during treatment processes, producing various DBPs such as trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids. Monitoring DBPs during water distribution is crucial to understand the types and concentrations of DBPs present in drinking water.
