New insights into the activities and toxicities of the old anticancer drug doxorubicin

Sabina Y. van der Zanden et al.

Summary: Doxorubicin is a commonly used chemotherapeutic drug with limited application due to severe adverse effects like cardiotoxicity, therapy-related malignancies, and gonadotoxicity. Recent studies have shown that doxorubicin causes DNA double-strand breaks and chromatin damage, the latter playing a major role in drug efficacy. Efforts are being made to develop effective analogues with limited adverse effects by understanding the mechanisms of anthracycline activities and toxicities.

One-step synthesis of N, P Co-doped orange carbon quantum dots with novel optical properties for bio-imaging

Naixin Li et al.

Summary: In this study, nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon dots were prepared using a solvothermal synthesis strategy, resulting in improved electronic properties and tunable luminescence. The prepared carbon dots showed excitation-dependent emission in the blue region and excitation-independent emission in the orange region, with a high quantum yield of 47%. The N, P-CDs were found to be non-toxic to cells and suitable for cell imaging applications, suggesting their potential as excellent bioimaging probes.

Amino-modified carbon dots as a functional platform for drug delivery: Load-release mechanism and cytotoxicity

Nana Shi et al.

Summary: Carbon dots (CDs) prepared from peony pollen and urea were utilized for carrying Doxorubicin (DOX) or Ferric ammonium citrate (FAC) in this study. The CDs-drugs exhibited lower cytotoxicity compared to free drugs and the release mechanism was determined by the bonding way between CDs and drug. The research suggests potential applications of CDs in drug delivery systems with -C=O or -COOH groups.
