Compromising Charge Generation and Recombination of Organic Photovoltaics with Mixed Diluent Strategy for Certified 19.4% Efficiency

Tianyi Chen et al.

Summary: A mixed diluent strategy, involving high bandgap NFA (BTP-S17) and low bandgap NFA (BTP-S16), is proposed to improve the device efficiency of organic photovoltaics (OPVs). The combination of BTP-S17 and BTP-S16 enables a better compromise between charge generation and recombination, leading to a high device performance of 19.76%.

Benzo[d]thiazole Based Wide Bandgap Donor Polymers Enable 19.54% Efficiency Organic Solar Cells Along with Desirable Batch-to-Batch Reproducibility and General Applicability

Bo Pang et al.

Summary: A series of new wide bandgap (WBG) polymers were developed by introducing S, F, and Cl atoms to the alkylthienyl sidechains on BDT, resulting in lowered energy levels and enhanced aggregation properties. Among them, PBTz-F exhibited a low-lying HOMO level and stronger face-on packing order, leading to a high-power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.57% in the PF-BTz:L8-BO blend. It also showed good batch-to-batch reproducibility and general applicability. Furthermore, ternary blend OSCs based on the PBTz-F:L8-BO blend achieved a further enhanced PCE of 19.54%, one of the highest values in OSCs.

Robust and hydrophobic interlayer material for efficient and highly stable organic solar cells

Yi Yang et al.

Summary: An interlayer material based on a designed cross-linkable naphtha-lene diimide (NDI) derivative is developed for highly stable and hydrophobic organic solar cells (OSCs). By n-doping the crosslinked c-NDI:PCy2 film with a non-polar electron donor PCy2, a remarkably high conductivity of 6.51 x 10-3 S/m is achieved with a five-fold increase in doping density. The strong hydrophobicity of the c-NDI:PCy2 interlayer provides excellent water resistance, enabling the OSCs to maintain 70% of their initial efficiency after 1,000 hours in the dark or 4 hours under continuous illumination (100 mW/cm2). The power conversion efficiency of the OSCs reaches 17.7% using the c-NDI:PCy2 interlayer, which is the highest reported value for OSCs with an inverted device architecture.

Highly Stable Organic Solar Cells Based on an Ultraviolet-Resistant Cathode Interfacial Layer

Qing Liao et al.

Summary: Although organic solar cells (OSCs) have achieved high photovoltaic efficiency, their practical use is limited by poor lifetime due to material decomposition caused by UV radiation. In this study, researchers have successfully fabricated highly efficient and exceptionally stable OSCs by incorporating a UV-resistant cathode interlayer (NDI-B) to protect the photovoltaic materials from UV-induced decomposition.
