Insights into the Role of Graphitic Carbon Nitride as a Photobase in Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer in (sp3)C-H Oxygenation of Oxazolidinones

Alexey Galushchinskiy et al.

Summary: Graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) is a transition metal free semiconductor that mediates photocatalytic reactions through proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism. The active sites for PCET are identified as the 'triangular pockets' on the edge facets of g-CN. Using excited state PCET, g-CN can selectively cleave X-H bonds with approximately 100 kcal mol(-1) bond dissociation free energy (BDFE), leading to the formation of 1,3-oxazolidine-2,4-diones.

Photochemical Methods Applied to DNA Encoded Library (DEL) Synthesis

Bianca Matsuo et al.

Summary: DNA-encoded library technology (DELT) is a new screening modality that combines chemically synthesized compounds with unique genetic tags to efficiently identify small molecules with potential biological activity. By using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis, ligands with high affinity for a biological target can be identified. Recent advances in photocatalysis have made visible-light-driven reactions a powerful approach for DELT, offering short reaction times and high efficiency while preserving the integrity of DNA molecules.

Simultaneous Harvesting of Multiple Hot Holes via Visible-Light Excitation of Plasmonic Gold Nanospheres for Selective Oxidative Bond Scission of Olefins to Carbonyls

Swathi Swaminathan et al.

Summary: By using visible photoexcitation of gold nanospheres, we have successfully collected multiple plasmon-induced "hot holes" to completely oxidatively cleave the C=C bond in styrene at room temperature, selectively forming benzaldehyde and formaldehyde, which is a reaction requiring activation of multiple substrates. Our findings indicate that efficient extraction of hot holes occurs with interband excitation, while harvesting of multiple hot holes from excited Au nanospheres becomes predominant only beyond a threshold light intensity. We demonstrate that alkene oxidation proceeds through a sequence of two consecutive elementary steps, namely a binding step and a cyclic oxometallate transition state as the rate-determining step. This plasmon excitation-mediated harvesting of multiple hot holes without the need for an extra hole transport media opens up exciting possibilities for difficult catalytic transformations involving multielectron oxidation processes.

Advances in downstream processes and applications of biological carboxylic acids derived from organic wastes

Chuang Chen et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the recent advances in recovery technologies of carboxylic acids and their applications, providing a reference for future study and industrial application. Integrated processes face the challenges of impurity removal from fermentation broth at the expense of loss and cost. Biological synthesis is a better option compared to chemical processes due to lower substrate requirements. The use of toxic agents, acid/alkaline consumption, and membrane fouling hinder the sustainability and scale-up of the downstream processes. Future research on novel solvents and materials is necessary to achieve sustainable recovery and cost reduction in the downstream processes.

Bi4O5Br2 catalyzed selective oxidative of C=C double bonds to ketones with molecular oxygen under visible-light irradiation

Tianxiang Liu et al.

Summary: Ketones play a crucial role in pharmaceuticals, food additives, and organic synthesis. Efficient and environmentally friendly selective oxidation cleavage of olefins is important for ketone synthesis. This study utilized a bismuth-rich Bi4O5Br2 photocatalyst, obtained through a microwave method, as a heterogeneous catalyst under visible-light irradiation. By using water/dioxane as the solvent and molecular oxygen as the oxygen source, various ketones were obtained in moderate to good yields. The catalyst exhibited stable activity over four cycles and the oxidative cleavage of C=C double bonds was attributed to superoxide radicals or photogenerated electrons and holes.
