Interplay of Active Sites and Microenvironment in High-Rate Electrosynthesis of H2O2 on Doped Carbon

Zhuo Xing et al.

Summary: Heteroatom doping is widely used in electrocatalyst design to improve performance, but it can also affect the wetting properties of the catalyst microenvironment. This study investigates the interplay between active sites and microenvironment in the electrochemical synthesis of H2O2 on doped carbon. The results show that while doping increases the intrinsic activity for H2O2 production, the optimal production rate is achieved with a moderately doped carbon catalyst due to changes in wetting characteristics.

Role of the Carbon-Based Gas Diffusion Layer on Flooding in a Gas Diffusion Electrode Cell for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Kailun Yang et al.

Summary: The deployment of gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has significantly increased current densities, but stability challenges arise due to rapid flooding of GDEs. Research shows that applied potential plays a central role in causing instabilities in carbon gas diffusion layers (GDLs) during CO2RR, leading to independent flooding issues. The study findings can be applied to electrochemical reduction reactions using carbon-based GDEs with cathodic overpotentials less than -0.65 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode.

Mixed Diffusion-Kinetic Control of H2O2 Oxidation at an Oxide-Covered Platinum Electrode in Alkaline Electrolyte: Implications for Oxygen Electroreduction Studies with a Rotating Ring Disk Electrode

Katarzyna Szwabinska et al.

Summary: The oxidation of H2O2 on an oxide-covered Pt ring is controlled by diffusion-kinetic mechanisms, with the ratio of empirical ring current to diffusion-controlled ring current varying with rotation rate. At 1.2 V-RHE, this ratio is 79.9 % at 400 rpm and 61.4 % at 2500 rpm, leading to incorrect diagnosis of the ORR mechanism and overestimation of electron transfer number values. An error elimination procedure based on the Koutecky-Levich method is proposed to address this issue.
