Origin and Evolution of Marsupial-specific Imprinting Clusters Through Lineage-specific Gene Duplications and Acquisition of Promoter Differential Methylation

Wenqi Cao et al.

Summary: Genomic imprinting is a phenomenon that plays important roles in many biological processes, and is only observed in therian mammals. A study investigated the imprinting pattern in marsupials using unbiased RNA-seq studies, discovering and validating 13 imprinted genes, including nine novel imprinted genes. Differential methylation and clustering were observed at marsupial-specific imprinted genes, revealing common mechanisms in the epigenetic regulation of marsupial imprinting.

Unrestricted gene flow between two subspecies of translocated brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) in Aotearoa New Zealand

Nimeshika Pattabiraman et al.

Summary: Despite phenotypic differences, two lineages of brushtail possums in New Zealand show no evidence of genetic partitioning, indicating they are able to freely interbreed. In some locations, they have formed completely mixed populations where genetic markers are unrelated to phenotype.

Time-calibrated phylogeny and ecological niche models indicate Pliocene aridification drove intraspecific diversification of brushtail possums in Australia

David Carmelet-Rescan et al.

Summary: Major aridification events in Australia during the Pliocene had significant impact on the distribution and structure of widespread species. By studying the subspecies of brushtail possums, it was found that there was little contact between their populations during the Pleistocene. This supports the recognition of multiple subspecies and explains their adaptations to regional plant assemblages.

The major urinary protein gene cluster knockout mouse as a novel model for translational metabolism research

Sarah Greve et al.

Summary: Scientific evidence suggests that major urinary proteins play a crucial role in murine scent communication and metabolism, particularly with higher expression in males. The study of major urinary protein knockout mice found metabolic differences primarily in male mice, including lipid accumulation and activation of lipogenesis. These findings suggest that the major urinary protein knockout mouse could serve as a potential alternative model for translational metabolism research.

Genome-wide detection of imprinted differentially methylated regions using nanopore sequencing

Vahid Akbari et al.

Summary: This study used nanopore sequencing data to map the imprinted intervals in the human genome. It successfully phased the human methylome and detected both known and novel imprinted DMRs. The study also found several conserved imprinted DMRs in mouse, rhesus monkey, and chimpanzee. These findings expand our understanding of imprinting and demonstrate the potential of nanopore sequencing in identifying imprinting regions.

Towards complete and error-free genome assemblies of all vertebrate species

Arang Rhie et al.

Summary: The Vertebrate Genome Project and the international Genome 10K consortium have collaborated to generate high-quality genome assemblies for 16 species representing six major vertebrate lineages, leading to new biological discoveries. Long-read sequencing technologies are essential for maximizing genome quality, and addressing complex repeats and haplotype heterozygosity are crucial for reducing assembly errors and improving completeness of reference genomes. The lessons learned from this project have paved the way for the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP), an international effort to generate high-quality, complete reference genomes for all known vertebrate species.

Has the introduction of two subspecies generated dispersal barriers among invasive possums in New Zealand?

Catriona D. Campbell et al.

Summary: Introduction of species to new environments can lead to the evolution of new forms through admixture and novel selection pressures. In New Zealand, the common brushtail possum, derived from two subspecies, shows evidence of at least two overlapping populations in the Hawkes Bay region, with a contact zone where a hybrid form is evident. This contact zone serves as a sink (and barrier) between the two subspecies, suggesting the existence of multiple such zones across the country. Identifying these contact zones may provide a targeted approach to controlling this pest.

Biological Roles of Lipocalins in Chemical Communication, Reproduction, and Regulation of Microbiota

Romana Stopkova et al.

Summary: The genetic remodelling of phenotypic traits accompanies major evolutionary transitions. Lipocalins in vertebrates play important roles in transporting substances, chemical signalling, odour reception, antimicrobial defence, and homeostasis. Current research focuses on the house mouse in comparison to other model taxa to understand the physiological functions of lipocalins in depth.

Summary: Nanopore sequencing has the ability to simultaneously detect modified nucleotides and produce long reads, making it ideal for detecting and phasing allele-specific methylation.
