Acinetobacter baumannii complex, national laboratory-based surveillance in South Africa, 2017 to 2019

Olga Perovic et al.

Summary: This study analyzed A. baumannii complex (ABC) isolated from blood cultures in South Africa and found a high level of drug resistance in the isolates, with at least 75% classified as extensively drug-resistant (XDR). Additionally, the study revealed a significant proportion of cases in infants and identified specific sequence types in colistin-resistant isolates.

Metagenomic prediction of antimicrobial resistance in critically ill patients with lower respiratory tract infections

Paula Hayakawa Serpa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) for predicting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacterial lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). The results showed that mNGS has utility for diagnosing resistant bacterial LRTI pathogens and conducting AMR surveillance.

A retrospective review of colistin utilisation at a tertiary care academic hospital in South Africa

Liezl Majavie et al.

Summary: The study analyzed patient records of adult and pediatric patients who received intravenous colistin in a South African hospital from May 1, 2016 to April 31, 2017. The findings indicated that although colistin usage was restricted in the hospital, it was not adequately monitored or controlled, with doses prescribed at the discretion of prescribing doctors and differing from currently accepted guidelines. Improved record-keeping practices related to monitoring of colistin use were necessary.

A retrospective analysis of pathogen profile, antimicrobial resistance and mortality in neonatal hospital-acquired bloodstream infections from 2009-2018 at Tygerberg Hospital, South Africa

Kessendri Reddy et al.

Summary: Although the HA-BSI rate in the neonatal unit decreased over the two periods, antimicrobial resistance rates in BSI pathogens remained high. Continuous surveillance of BSI is a valuable tool for detecting changes in pathogen and AMR profiles, and guiding empiric antibiotic recommendations for neonatal units in resource-limited settings.
