Frontier in the diamond anvil cell techniques for ultrahigh pressure generation

Yingji Ding et al.

Summary: The diamond anvil cell (DAC) is a crucial tool for high-pressure research in various fields. However, the strain on the culet of single crystal diamond in the conventional DAC limits its pressure capacity to 400 GPa. Innovative designs like the double stage DAC (ds-DAC) and toroidal DAC have been proposed to overcome this limitation, reaching pressures above 600 GPa and even static pressures above 1.0 TPa. These advancements have greatly expanded the pressure range for exploring unique properties and new materials.

Recent in situ experimental and theoretical advances in severe plastic deformations, strain- induced phase transformations, and microstructure evolution under high pressure

Valery I. Levitas

Summary: This review summarizes recent advances in the study of nanostructured materials and stable or metastable high-pressure phases produced by severe plastic deformations under high pressure, primarily by high-pressure torsion. In situ experimental and theoretical investigations of strain-induced phase transformations and microstructure evolution under high pressure using diamond anvil cell or rotational diamond anvil cell have been discussed. Combined with x-ray diffraction and synchrotron radiation, the radial distribution of volume fraction of phases, pressure, dislocation density, and crystallite size in each phase can be determined, revealing their evolution and interaction. Additionally, finite element simulations aid in understanding the stress and plastic strain tensors as well as the volume fraction of high-pressure phase, allowing for better control of the occurring processes. Atomistic, nanoscale, and scale-free phase-field simulations provide insights into the physical mechanisms behind the significant reduction in phase transformation pressure, the appearance of new phases, and the kinetics of strain-controlled phase transformations compared to hydrostatic loading. By integrating in situ experiments with multiscale theory, potential methods for controlling strain-induced phase transformations and microstructure evolution can be developed, leading to the design of cost-effective synthetic pathways for the production of desired high-pressure phases, nanostructures, and nanocomposites.

Resolving puzzles of the phase-transformation-based mechanism of the strong deep-focus earthquake

Valery Levitas

Summary: This study presents a developed theory that explains the puzzles of deep-focus earthquakes, including the coupled deformation, plastic strain-induced phase transformation, transformation-induced plasticity, and self-blown-up deformation-transformation-heating process in shear bands. By considering the transformation in olivine as plastic strain-induced and finding an analytical solution for the coupled deformation-transformation-heating process in shear bands, the study provides insights into the mechanisms behind the jump in strain rates and sudden transformation of metastable olivine. The study also highlights the importance of the thermomechanochemical feedback in the severe transformation-induced plasticity and self-blown-up deformation-transformation-heating process.

Summary: Research shows that the combination of prebiotically plausible minerals and mechanochemical activation can oligomerize glycine at ambient temperature in the absence of water. Additionally, raising the reaction temperature contributes to increasing the degree of oligomerization, along with the formation of the undesired cyclic glycine dimer.
