Impact of bimetallic interface design on heat generation in plasmonic Au/Pd nanostructures studied by single-particle thermometry

Julian Gargiulo et al.

Summary: The authors investigate the influence of bimetallic interface design on the photothermal properties of Au/Pd nanostructures. Measurements using thermometry at the single-particle level show that the inclusion of Pd as a shell significantly reduces the photothermal response compared to bare cores, while including Pd as satellites has minimal effect. These results provide insights into the energy conversion processes in plasmon-assisted catalysis.

Tailoring Plasmonic Bimetallic Nanocatalysts Toward Sunlight-Driven H2 Production

Matias Herran et al.

Summary: Hybrid nanoparticles combining plasmonic and catalytic components have potential applications in sunlight-to-chemical energy conversion. Core-satellite structures show higher reaction enhancement under illumination compared to core-shell structures. The difference lies in the excitation of highly localized and asymmetric electric fields, with the core Au particle capturing visible light through localized plasmon resonances and the surrounding Pd satellites transducing the enhanced electric field into catalytic activity.

Single-Particle Insights into Plasmonic Hot Carrier Separation Augmenting Photoelectrochemical Ethanol Oxidation with Photocatalytically Synthesized Pd-Au Bimetallic Nanorods

Gregory T. Forcherio et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fate of carriers on Au nanorods before and after the presence of reductively photodeposited Pd, showing enhanced injection/separation of hot carriers into Pd and improved photon-to-current efficiency in photoelectrochemical ethanol oxidation. The photocurrent during ethanol oxidation was greatly enhanced under solar-simulated and surface plasmon resonance-targeted irradiation conditions after photodepositing Pd, due to enhanced participation of intraband-excited sp-band holes and desorption of reaction intermediates.
