A general synthesis of azetidines by copper-catalysed photoinduced anti-Baldwin radical cyclization of ynamides

Clement Jacob et al.

Summary: This study reports a general anti-Baldwin radical 4-exo-dig cyclization from nitrogen-substituted alkynes. Under visible light irradiation in the presence of a heteroleptic copper complex and an amine, a range of ynamides smoothly cyclize to the corresponding azetidines. The cyclization reaction shows full control of the regioselectivity, allowing the synthesis of useful building blocks in natural product synthesis and medicinal chemistry.

Intermolecular [2π+2σ]-photocycloaddition enabled by triplet energy transfer

Roman Kleinmans et al.

Summary: In this study, a new intermolecular [2+2]-photocycloaddition method using bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes as 2 sigma-electron reactants was reported. This reaction was realized by visible-light-mediated triplet energy transfer catalysis. The method allows for a simple, modular, and diastereoselective synthesis of bicyclo[2.1.1]hexanes and extends to a-bonds, providing previously inaccessible structural motifs.

Practical and modular construction of benzo[c]phenanthridine compounds

Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Here, we present a general and modular strategy for the rapid assembly of benzo[c]phenanthridine (BCP) derivatives using homogeneous gold catalysis. This strategy involves a selectively intramolecular cascade reaction followed by an intermolecular cyclization to form successive C-N and C-C bonds. By utilizing readily available nitriles as the nitrogen source, the products are obtained in good yield with excellent functional group compatibility.

Asymmetric Allylation by Chiral Organocatalyst-Promoted Formal Hetero-Ene Reactions of Alkylgold Intermediates

Guizhi Dong et al.

Summary: The study presents an unprecedented catalytic asymmetric allylation of isatins and isatin-derived ketimines via a gold and chiral organocatalyst cooperative catalysis strategy, leading to the expeditious synthesis of chiral 2,5-disubstituted alkylideneoxazolines with vicinal stereogenic centers. The mechanism involves an alkylgold intermediate, and the X-ray crystal structure of the allylgold species reveals its unique stability and reactivity. Additionally, an asymmetric formal hetero-ene reaction of the gold intermediate is enabled with the assistance of a quinine-derived squaramide catalyst, extending the synthetic applications of gold complexes and the versatility of gold catalysis.

Divergent Gold Catalysis: Unlocking Molecular Diversity through Catalyst Control

Chetan C. Chintawar et al.

Summary: Gold complexes have emerged as powerful catalysts in divergent catalysis, offering unique reactivity profiles due to their tunable soft pi-acidic nature. They not only catalyze reactions of alkynes, alkenes, and allenes effectively, but also provide divergent reaction pathways over other pi-acid catalysts like Ag, Pt, Pd, Rh, Cu, In, Sc, Hg, Zn, etc. Reviews documenting such examples are sporadic, hindering the further development of this burgeoning field, thus necessitating a unified approach like Divergent Gold Catalysis (DGC) to consolidate reports and pave the way for advancement.
