Superconducting vortices carrying a temperature-dependent fraction of the flux quantum

Yusuke Iguchi et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that quantum vortices with nonuniversally quantized magnetic flux exist in the superconductor Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0.77). These vortices enclose a magnetic flux equal to the magnetic flux quantum, but the magnitude of the flux is not universally quantized and varies continuously with temperature.

Prediction of time-reversal-symmetry breaking fermionic quadrupling condensate in twisted bilayer graphene

I. Maccari et al.

Summary: Recent mean-field calculations indicate that twisted bilayer graphene in its superconducting state may exhibit either a nematic order or a breakdown of time-reversal symmetry. The two-dimensional nature of the material and its high critical temperature compared to the Fermi energy suggest significant fluctuations. Monte Carlo simulations are used to study these fluctuations, revealing a phase with quadrupling fermionic order induced by fluctuations in the proposed model for twisted bilayer graphene. This four-electron condensate, instead of superconductivity, displays spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. The results suggest that twisted bilayer graphene is a promising platform to study condensates beyond the traditional pair-condensate paradigm.

Elastocaloric determination of the phase diagram of Sr2RuO4

You-Sheng Li et al.

Summary: One of the main developments in unconventional superconductivity in the past two decades is the discovery that most unconventional superconductors form phase diagrams that also contain other strongly correlated states. Tuning between the resultant ordered phases is the subject of intense research. Recently, uniaxial pressure applied using piezoelectric-based devices has been shown to be a versatile method of tuning.

Summary: Based on recent experiments, this study derives an effective model to describe the spontaneous magnetic fields observed in the condensate of four-fermion composites. The model, similar to the Faddeev-Skyrme model, is shown to be capable of accommodating topological excitations.

Heat capacity double transitions in time-reversal symmetry broken superconductors

Henrik S. Roising et al.

Summary: This study investigates the occurrence of a second heat capacity jump in unconventional superconductors, which can be controlled by external perturbations. A theoretical framework is developed to determine the ratio of heat capacity jumps based on the band structure and order parameter momentum structure. The results suggest that certain order parameters may exhibit a strongly suppressed second heat capacity jump in Sr2RuO4, potentially explaining why it has not been detected experimentally.

Recent progress on superconductors with time-reversal symmetry breaking

Sudeep Kumar Ghosh et al.

Summary: Superconductivity and magnetism are opposing states of matter, with the presence of spontaneous magnetic fields inside the superconducting state being a fascinating phenomenon that has prompted extensive research. Recent experimental discoveries of unconventional superconductors breaking time-reversal symmetry, along with theoretical efforts to understand their properties, are discussed in this review. The importance of multiple bands in understanding order parameter symmetries and pairing mechanisms is also highlighted.

State with spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry above the superconducting phase transition

Vadim Grinenko et al.

Summary: Experimental observations in hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 show the formation of fermionic bound states at lower temperatures, but a generation of self-induced magnetic fields in the resistive state is observed when the doping level is x approximate to 0.8 instead of the expected diamagnetic screening and zero resistance. This indicates the existence of a bosonic metal state breaking time-reversal symmetry, consistent with the theory of a state with fermionic quadrupling.

Split superconducting and time-reversal symmetry-breaking transitions in Sr2RuO4 under stress

Vadim Grinenko et al.

Summary: The study on the superconductivity of strontium ruthenate revealed that applying strain can lead to a splitting between the onset of superconductivity and the breaking of time-reversal symmetry, indicating a possible chiral d-wave order parameter. Furthermore, the appearance of bulk magnetic order was observed under higher uniaxial stress above a critical pressure in Sr2RuO4.

High-sensitivity heat-capacity measurements on Sr2RuO4 under uniaxial pressure

You-Sheng Li et al.

Summary: This study reports the measurement of heat capacity in samples subject to large and highly homogeneous uniaxial pressure to investigate the superconductivity of Sr2RuO4. The normalized jump in heat capacity, Delta C/C, grows smoothly as a function of uniaxial pressure, favoring order parameters that are allowed to maximize in the same part of the Brillouin zone. These findings provide stringent constraints on theories of the superconductivity of Sr2RuO4.
