First demonstration of tuning between the Kitaev and Ising limits in a honeycomb lattice

Faranak Bahrami et al.

Summary: Recent observations of novel spin-orbit coupled states have generated interest in 4d/5d transition metal systems. In this study, we manipulate the competition between spin-orbit interaction and crystal field to restructure the spin-orbital wave functions and discover a previously unobserved state that drives Ising interactions.

Room-temperature valence transition in a strain-tuned perovskite oxide

Vipul Chaturvedi et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered a remarkable phenomenon in praseodymium-containing cobalt oxides where strain tuning can stabilize valence-driven spin-state/structural/metal-insulator transitions in thin films. This result has important technological and fundamental implications.

Exchange interactions in d5 Kitaev materials: From Na2IrO3 to α-RuCl3

Huimei Liu et al.

Summary: We conducted an analytical study on the exchange interactions between pseudospin one-half d(5) ions in honeycomb lattices with edge-shared octahedra. We considered various exchange channels including Hubbard U, charge-transfer excitations, and cyclic exchange, and included hoppings within t(2g) orbitals as well as between t(2g) and e(g) orbitals. Our study focused on the effects of the trigonal crystal field Delta on the exchange parameters. We found that the obtained exchange Hamiltonian is mainly dominated by ferromagnetic Kitaev interaction K within a wide range of Delta.

PyCrystalField: software for calculation, analysis and fitting of crystal electric field Hamiltonians

A. Scheie

Summary: PyCrystalField is a Python software package designed for calculating single-ion crystal electric field (CEF) Hamiltonians. It can calculate CEF Hamiltonians from a point charge model for transition or rare earth ions, perform symmetry analysis, calculate energy spectrum and observables, and fit experimental data.

Probing Multiconfigurational States by Spectroscopy: The Cerium XAS L3-edge Puzzle

Dumitru-Claudiu Sergentu et al.

Summary: The Ce L-3 edge XAS spectra of CeO2 and cerocene were accurately calculated using relativistic ab-initio multireference wavefunction approaches. The study aimed to solve the puzzle regarding the relationship between the XAS peaks and the 4f electron occupation. The calculated GS 4f-shell occupations show good agreement with measurements, indicating Ce IV and III oxidation numbers.

Collective excitations in the tetravalent lanthanide honeycomb antiferromagnet Na2PrO3

M. J. Daum et al.

Summary: Thermomagnetic and inelastic neutron-scattering measurements on Na2PrO3 revealed magnetic fluctuations and crystal-field excitations, leading to the development of a microscopic model of exchange interactions. The data suggests dominant Heisenberg exchange interactions and an easy-axis XXZ exchange anisotropy in Na2PrO3.
