Cannabidiol as Self-Assembly Inducer for Anticancer Drug-Based Nanoparticles

Eleonora Colombo et al.

Summary: Cannabidiol (CBD), a compound found in Cannabis plants, is shown to be an effective inducer in the formation of nanoparticles. These nanoparticles, formed through solvent displacement, exhibit monodisperse and stable structures. They show low micromolar range cytotoxicity on human tumor cell lines, with the involvement of paclitaxel confirmed in the most effective nanoparticle (NP 8B) through further biological assays.

Recent Advances in Aggregation-Induced Emission Active Materials for Sensing of Biologically Important Molecules and Drug Delivery System

Geeta A. Zalmi et al.

Summary: The emergence and development of aggregation induced emission (AIE) have attracted worldwide attention due to its unique photophysical phenomenon and for removing the obstacle of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). AIE has become an important aspect in various fields such as fluorescent material, sensing, bioimaging, optoelectronics, drug delivery system, and theranostics. This review focuses on AIE active materials and their applications, and also explores the potential of AIE active fluorescent material in supramolecular chemistry.

Fatty Acids/Tetraphenylethylene Conjugates: Hybrid AIEgens for the Preparation of Peptide-Based Supramolecular Gels

Elisa Impresari et al.

Summary: Aggregation-induced emissive materials, composed of tetraphenylethylene scaffold combined with fatty acids of different lengths, have been synthesized and characterized for their ability to self-assemble into supramolecular emissive structures depending on chemical composition and water content. These compounds have also been utilized as N-terminus capping agents in peptide-based materials development, leading to the creation of luminescent fibrillary materials that are non-cytotoxic and capable of forming supramolecular gels in aqueous environments.

Recent Progress in Polymeric AIE-Active Drug Delivery Systems: Design and Application

Yang Pei et al.

Summary: Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) provides a new opportunity to overcome the drawbacks of traditional aggregation-induced quenching of chromophores, with applications spreading across various fields. In particular, the use of AIE-active fluorophores in drug delivery systems (DDSs) allows for imaging-guided therapy and pharmacodynamic monitoring, which has potential social importance. Polymeric AIE-active DDSs are gaining attention for their advantages in easy fabrication and tunable optical properties, and are promising for improving the effectiveness of cancer therapy, antibacterial treatment, and pharmacodynamic monitoring.

Self-Assembly Nanoparticles of Natural Bioactive Abietane Diterpenes

Epole Ntungwe et al.

Summary: Different approaches to enhance drug penetration through physiological barriers, such as self-assembly drug conjugates, have shown to be promising in improving drug activity and penetration, and reducing side effects. In this study, three molecules derived from natural products were synthesized as lead molecules for self-assembled nanoparticles, which demonstrated lower cytotoxicity compared to their individual form when tested on different cell lines. The nanoparticles showed potential as prodrugs for the release of cytotoxic lead molecules based on their size, zeta potential, and low release of drug at physiological pH.
