Wrestling With the Invincibility Myth: Exploring Physicians' Resistance to Wellness and Resilience-Building Interventions

Kori A. LaDonna et al.

Summary: This research examines the resistance of physicians to interventions aimed at enhancing their wellness and building their resilience. Physicians feel that the compassionate values advocated by healthcare organizations do not extend to them, and professional values and organizational norms hinder work-life balance and discourage disclosure of struggles. The study suggests that efforts to build individual resilience are futile without changes in professional values and sustained organizational support.

The Practice Enhancement, Engagement, Resilience, and Support (PEERS) program was designed to teach well-being concepts and coping skills to medical students through small-group sessions. Now in its fourth year, PEERS has been recognized as an effective intervention for trainee well-being, establishing a space for emotional support and community building. The program is continually evolving and being adapted for other medical training programs.

Why impaired wellness may be inevitable in medicine, and why that may not be a bad thing

William E. Bynum et al.

Summary: The current state of wellness in medicine is characterized by narrow conceptualizations and solutions informed by a disease-focused approach. Moving forward requires clear definitions of wellness, methodologies incorporating direct interaction with participants, and a shift away from disease-model approaches. Wellness should be reimagined as healthy and authentic engagement with the inevitable challenges of a medical career to support the development of coping mechanisms and resilience.

The Importance of Formalized, Lifelong Physician Career Development: Making the Case for a Paradigm Shift

R. Thomas Collins et al.

Summary: Structured development processes are valued in formal physician training programs, but there is a lack of formalized and intentional physician career development programs beyond the early stage of physicians' careers. This lack of a philosophy of intentional, career-long individual development at academic medical centers leads to underutilization of physicians' potential and long-term loss for the centers, physicians, and society as a whole.
