Physician assistant education program director attrition and consideration to leave

Summary: This study aimed to characterize clinical coordinators compared to other Physician Assistant (PA) faculty, and investigate factors associated with their intent to leave. Data from the 2019 Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) Faculty and Directors Survey was analyzed. Clinical directors expressed a higher intention to leave their position compared to other faculty. Factors influencing intent to leave were dissatisfaction with professional development and burnout. Clinical directors with severe burnout had 27 times higher odds of intending to leave academia. Our findings emphasize the importance of professional development opportunities and faculty mentoring to retain clinical directors and address burnout.
